When to go
Italy typically pushes 30 degrees in the late summer months, which is ideal for sunbathing but makes sightseeing an uncomfortable affair. Book for May and June – when the temperature is balmy, rather than baking – to enjoy the best of both worlds.

Getting there`
Most major airlines run frequent flights to Milan’s Malpensa Airport, the starting-point for your trip. All airport transfers – and inland journeys – in an air-conditioned, chauffeured car, are included in the trip. On departure, your driver will drop you off at the same airport for your flight home or to your next destination.

Packing tips

  • Plenty of credit for card-flashing in Milan’s boutiques.
  • Stylish trainers for sightseeing and village-hopping.
  • A nose for both new designers and Renaissance masterpieces.

Day 1–3: Milan

Heaven for those flush with credit, Milan has enough high-end boutiques and designer denizens to satisfy even the most acquisitive Smiths. You’ll arrive by private car at Palazzo Parigi, your stylish hub for the next two nights.

Your hotel…

Your hotel…

Once the site of a prestigious bank, Palazzo Parigi is now a lavish boutique hotel. Unfortunately, it has no more coins in its coffers (so you’ll have to bankroll those shopping trips yourself). What it does have are marble-accented suites, two restaurants, an indoor pool complete with trickling fountains… need we go on?

Smith Extra A bottle of prosecco and fresh fruit in your room on arrival

Day 1: Spend your first afternoon settling into your new palazzo digs; early evening will call for a Campari soda (Milan’s signature cocktail) on the terrace, followed by dinner at the chandelier-bedecked restaurant.

Day 2: If Imelda Marcos is your style icon and ‘more is more’ is your maxim of choice, head straight for a spot of shopping on Via Monte Napoleone, dubbed the ‘fashion quadrilateral’ for its excess of luxury labels.

Day 3: Find time for a tour around the Cathedral (it took a whole six centuries to complete, so it’s pretty impressive) before hopping in your private car, which will whisk you off to Lake Como.

Days 3–7: Lake Como

After 90 minutes on the road, you’ll reach Lake Como, home to discerning stars (George Clooney famously has a pad here) and Mother Nature’s own celebrities: glistening waters, snow-capped mountains and forest-studded hillsides.

Your hotel…

Your hotel…

You’ll spend four nights at Grand Hotel Tremezzo, a lakeside stay straight out of a Fellini starlet’s dreams: spend days lounging by the main pool (which floats right on top of the lake) and evenings working through a wine list of more than 300 bottles on the colonnaded terrace. Accomodation is included, but most activites and all meals are at guests' leisure; there's plenty to choose from, whether you want to skip through 'just as they were' mediaeval streets or compare the local vintages.

Smith Extra Tickets to Villa Carlotta botanical gardens. For Goldsmiths, there is also a bottle of prosecco and a cocoa-and-almond 'valentina' cake

Day 3: Find your feet (or fins) at the hotel, where it’s water, water, everywhere – there are three glittering pools and a sun-drenched beach for you to sample on your first day, so it’s the perfect spot to road-test your best bikini.

Day 4: Today we recommend securing a private guide to take you through the cobbled piazzas and stradas of ancient city Como, followed by a stop at tiny, hilltop town Brunate, which offers on-high aspects of the lake and surrounds. History lessons and cultural learnings can be punctuated by a trip to a local winery – just in time for an apéritif…

Day 5: Bellagio isn’t called the ‘pearl of the lake’ for nothing – just the two of you can discover this picturesque village (and its neighbour, Tremezzo) on a full-day tour with a local guide who's fluent in English. Your driver will whisk you to Tremezzo to see the manicured botanical gardens and neoclassical grandeur of 17th-century Villa Carlotta. Then, after a short ferry ride with your guide, you'll reach Bellagio. First stop, former duke's residence Villa Melzi to see the botanist trimmed and tamed gardens, then on to explore the 'straight from a Disney movi' lakeside town.

Day 6: From the tempting choice of tour add-ons, we suggest the full-day journey from Tirano to St Moritz on board the Unesco-listed Trenino Rosso del Bernina, a ruby-red, 19th-century steam train. Explore the Segantini Museum, shop on the Via Serlas and try nut tart at a local café.

Day 7: For your last full day, arrange an excursion to the lakeside village of Domaso and its neighbouring hills, where you’ll have the chance to visit a family-owned winery to sample the local tipples, including wine and grappa. When you’re fully sated, you’ll be taken back to the hotel to collect your luggage before being driven to the airport to catch your flight home.
