Resting amid swathes of preserved wilderness, 19th-century Son Blanc Farmhouse Menorca, set at the centre of the Balearic island, has been renovated into a boutique stay with all its rustic charms kept intact. Low-key rural living is wholly embraced here – the hotel’s surrounding 130 hectares of wild countryside are primed for hiking and biking, while a spot of gardening and rolling-up-of guests’ sleeves to aid in daily farm work immerse you in the local day-to-day. The likes of dance sessions and ceramic workshops root you in the region’s culture, and the hotel’s 14 rooms are all uniquely styled with artisanal touches; altogether, it’s a masterclass in communing with nature in considered luxury.

Our favourite rooms
Each of Son Blanc Farmhouse Menorca’s 14 rooms are uniquely designed and come with their own terrace, so even though you’re on a farm, there are no short-straws here. Natural textiles – exposed stone, clay and wood – enhance the hotel’s dreamy, soothing atmosphere. Still, it’s the Rural Suites, with outdoor hot tubs, private gardens, and terraces leading out to wilderness that cinch it.
Poolside
The large outdoor saltwater pool, fringed with rocks for a beachside feel, is open from 9am to 8pm. Head to the neighbouring pool bar when you’re feeling peckish.
Spa
There’s no spa, but there are two treatment rooms if you’d like a massage (and plans for open-air massages are in the works too).
Packing tips
Bring multitasking clothing that can work both in active settings and tempered surrounds.
Also
Many of the hotel’s public areas are wheelchair-accessible: the ground floor of the main house, restaurant, yoga studio, and terraces. However the rural nature of the stay may make it tricky to navigate.
Little Smiths are welcome, just ensure you bring all the kid-friendly kit you’ll need as the hotel doesn’t provide any extras.
Best for
All ages are welcome, though the hotel is not targeted towards children.
Recommended rooms
Those travelling with kids can only book into the hotel’s Rural Suites. Away from the main house, families have additional privacy and other guests are undisturbed. Win, win. These suites are also the most spacious.
Activities
From walking trails to craft workshops, there’s infinite activities to keep little Smiths busy.
Swimming pool
The pool is not protected or guarded, and families are reminded to keep an eye on their children at all times – and also to keep noise levels down.
Meals
Menus lean towards healthy fare that is locally sourced.
Sustainability efforts
The hotel aims to be self-sustainable and minimise their carbon footprint by producing their own energy and reducing consumption (through the use of high-efficiency appliances and thermal ceiling-cooling panels), growing the majority of the produce they use, and harvesting and reusing water. To do this in Earth-kind style they restored two underground cisterns, and built an extra reservoir and treatment plant. Buildings were sustainably constructed and they practise low-intervention, regenerative agriculture. The hotel also uses plant-based bathroom products and operates a no-plastic policy. They are certified by the Plastic Free Menorca organisation and also support the Menorca Preservation Fund; and meals are as local and seasonal as can be, while waste is kept to a minimum in the kitchen and composting is taken seriously (there’s a dedicated machine and everything).
Snag a table anywhere on the earthen-hued summer terrace, taking in the wild, wonderfully lush views.
Dress Code
Low-key cool, to reflect the understated sophistication of your surroundings.
Hotel restaurant
The chefs are inspired by the surrounding land and sea, resulting in a simple, regularly changing menu which champions ‘primitive methods such as smoking, chargrilling, pickling, or drying’. While meat and fish feature, the menu’s plant-based creations take top billing, whipped up at the open kitchen, where low-energy consumption is considered in the sustainable cooking, meaning smoky, ember-cooked fare. On Wednesday evenings the main restaurant hosts communal-table events, championing the fun. In general, a long-table concept permeates throughout the space, snaking through to the small, canopied terrace and beyond where you can sit among the olive trees. Breakfast takes the form of an open buffet starring fresh juices and homemade delicacies.
Hotel bar
The Finca bar on the first floor of the main house operates on an ‘honesty’ policy and, as such, is open from noon to 8pm. Mix your own drinks at the rectangular, sugar-white bar, choosing from a selection of quality, small-batch spirits (or a homemade coca-cola or cordial), and enjoy your pour in the communal living room, gathering by the stone hearth on cooler evenings.

Worth getting out of bed for
There’s a lot to do at the hotel itself, with a thoughtful programme of wellness and recharging activities. There’s an outdoor gym as well as a large, light-flooded yoga studio (plus an outdoor deck for when it's balmy). Green-fingered guests also have the option to partake in the daily farming or gardening activities. Additionally, the hotel organises an array of cultural events from exhibitions to concerts, as well as dance classes, pottery making, cooking sessions, and more to keep creative minds flowing.
With Son Blanc Farmhouse positioned at the near centre of the island you’re well situated to explore in all and any directions. Those keen to explore further can always go Balearic-island hopping…
Local restaurants
Consume mounds of paella at Es Molí de Foc or tuck into garden-fresh dishes at Menorca Experimental. Meanwhile, island flavours sizzle at Torralbenc where focus is placed on grilled dishes and local products, with specialities including red-prawn rice and charcoal-grilled octopus. Don’t skip dessert here: word of their Mahón cheesecake has spread far beyond the capital’s confines.
Local cafés
For a delicately flavoured water or a kombucha, look no further than your own minibar; for a glass of wine away from base (in the south of the island to be exact), pay a visit to Binifadet vineyard.
Local bars
Welcoming revellers since the 1960s, cliffside bar and nightclub Cova d’en Xoroi has a reputation for being a bit of a partier; in fact, you may be boogying here until breakfast (or close to it). Located on the south coast of the island, come during the day for chiller vibes. For a little novelty on the isle, try tiki bar Hawaiano.

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Son Blanc Farmhouse Menorca in the Balearics…
A 19th-century renovated farmhouse close to the bull’s-eye centre of the isle, Son Blanc Farmhouse Menorca rests amid swathes of preserved wilderness. As such nature reigns here, and so the hotel promotes a simpler way of living, with the focus placed on community and locality. Embracing the rural lifestyle, the hotel – whose architecture blends in with the surrounding 130 hectares of countryside – champions wellness and creativity, and getting to know your fellow guests, giving you ample opportunities to do so. Enjoy a range of walking routes across the surrounding wilds, sign up to gardening activities or participate in the daily farm work – sessions at the outdoor gym or contortions on the alfresco yoga deck are also ways of getting your quota of fresh air and green scenes. Meanwhile, the large, light-flooded yoga studio plays host to a variety of dance classes, meditation sessions, and more. In addition to the hotel’s robust wellness programme, there are creative classes and cultured events, spanning pottery workshops in their ceramic studio to dancing classes, to exhibitions and talks. The whitewashed finca houses 14 bedrooms with artisanal touches (like weaving, Menorcan wood and intricate tile work); peaceful havens to crash in after full and fulfilling days.
