Luxury holidays in Ahungalla

While the rest of us have been slow to recognise Ahungalla’s paradisaic allure, turtles have been beaching ashore in this sultry corner of southwest Sri Lanka for centuries. Swaying palms and ocean-sculpted, rattan-hued sands are the main draw here, although scenic backwaters, Madu Ganga Lake, and easy access to Balapitiya and Bentota, mean you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to off-beach adventures, too.

When to go

Whales visit Sri Lanka’s coastal waters from December until April – also the most popular months for visitors. By May, humidity is on the rise and rain returns (true of October and November too). Monsoon-churned seas are the hallmark of July and August.
