When to go

From December until April are the best months to visit Dunedin, when the mercury rises and there’s less rain to contend with. You’re in the most southerly, and therefore coldest, region of New Zealand, so dress for winter between April and October.

  A 30-minute drive outside the city, Dunedin has a regional airport with connections to Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland. The nearest international air hub is Christchurch, four-and-a-half hours away by road.

• Automobiles

  You won’t need a car to navigate Dunedin itself, but for the freedom to explore the Otago coastline and vineyard-dotted interior, wheels are advisable.
