When to go

Summer and autumn – when the wineries are in full operation – are the most popular times to visit; the bay-view lavender fields are usually in bloom during July and mid-September too. Check out the summer calendar of events if you have your heart set on Lobsterfests or fireworks displays – you’ll have plenty to choose from. For lighter crowds and a chance to see the vines blossom, visit in the late spring.

Getting there

• Planes

  New York City’s major hubs (JFK and LaGuardia) are 90 miles away, or about 90 minutes away by car. Domestic flights from along the East Coast land at Long Island MacArthur Airport, which is about an hour’s drive from North Fork.

• Trains

  The train ride from New York’s Penn Station will get you to North Fork’s Greenport Station – via the north branch of the Long Island Railroad – in about three hours. You can also hop on at Jamaica station, near JFK airport.

• Automobiles

  The drive from New York takes two hours; you can hire a car at the airport.
