When to go

SoCal gets clement weather year-round, but at the tail-end and beginning of the year Encinitas is a little cooler. And you’ll find the most surfable swells in spring and fall.

Getting there

• Planes

  San Diego International is the closest airport, about a half-hour drive away or 45 minutes during commuting times and weekends when San Diegans head upstate.

• Trains

  The NCTD Coaster line rides along this iconic stretch of shore, and Encinitas and Solanas Beach are the handiest stops for reaching the city center.

• Automobiles

  Sustainability is one of the city’s key concerns, and the blocks are quite walkable here, so explore on foot or by bike wherever possible. However, this is a stop on legendary road-trip route Highway 101, so you’ll need a car for going the distance, jaunting into San Diego or exploring the greener expanses inland.
