When to go

Courtesy of its tropical location, Itacaré enjoys warm temperatures year-round. Humidity and chance of rain is at its lowest from December to March, when the region is busiest; but if you go during July or August you might catch whale sightings off the coast of the Contas river.

Getting there

  • Planes

The closest international airport is in Salvador; from there you can make a day of it and drive just over six hours along Brazil’s scenic coastline to Itacaré. Or hop on a domestic flight for 50-minutes to Ilhéus and then hail a taxi, which’ll drive you north for an hour to the town centre.
  • Automobiles

You can rent a car from either Salvador or Ilhéus airport – a 4x4 is probably your best bet – and drive down (or up) the coast to Itacaré. Once there, a car can be handy to reach some of the more remote beaches.
