Luxury holidays in Aruba

You’ll quickly see why Aruba's slogan is ‘one happy island’, when you’ve ridden around sweet-shop-hued capital Oranjestad on an old-school tram, hung out with flamboyances of flamingoes on the wildly beautiful beaches and hiked through the cacti-strewn savannah of Arikok National Park. Beneath the placid waters, riotously coloured reefs and spooky shipwrecks make for fascinating dive excursions, and above ground you can ride horses through the arid landscape and make friends with more four-legged locals at the donkey sanctuary. But, aside from the odd four-wheel-drive trip to swim in natural pools or try your hand at catching wahoo, you’ll likely spend your days flopped in a sunlounger enjoying the consistently sunny outlook and getting happier by the minute.

When to go

Aruba enjoys sunny climes year round. In winter months, visitors from the US send room rates soaring and crowd the beaches, but throughout April to August you’ll easily find a secluded sunlounging spot.

Getting there

  • Planes

Most flights arrive at Oranjestad’s Queen Beatrix International Airport, largely from North and South America, although European travellers can fly direct from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
  • Automobiles

Public transport is – let’s say – unhurried, so for more independence exploring the 180sq km island, hire a four-wheel drive to potter about in.
