Luxury holidays in Sint Eustatius

Sleepy Sint Eustatius, commonly known as Statia, sits just above St Kitts and Nevis on the northern leeward side of the West Indies. Booming trade once dominated this small island, so much so it gained a grand reputation as the Caribbean’s ‘Golden Rock’; but it’s since slowed its pace, and today it enjoys a quieter way of life. Despite its small size, Sint Eustatius is rife with adventure. The coral-coated reefs – home to over 240 species of fish – and ancient ruins are a great starting point for intrepid divers, while landlubbers may be happier hiking the volcanic Quill and its craggy coast before heading for a sundowner in Oranjestad’s lower town.

When to go

Though there isn’t really a bad time to visit Sint Eustatius, December to July typically have the warmest weather, while August to November can be slightly wetter so may not be ideal for hikers.

Getting there

  • Planes

Most arrivals land in St Maarten, where you’ll then have to hop on a small 20-minute Winair flight to reach Sint Eustatius.
  • Automobiles

Ditch the wheels during your stay on the island and roam barefoot through the sunbleached sands of Zeelandia Bay or don hiking boots and head along the sea-lapped coast.
