Luxury holidays in Rochefort

A launchpad for the traditional hunting grounds of the Belgian Ardennes, Rochefort in Wallonia has evolved its game to attract those in search of more peaceful pastoral pursuits, too (and is only an hour or so from Brussels). This forested, riverine region is dotted with caves, standing stones and archeological ruins, and has its share of Disney-esque turreted towns, too. And even if you’re not up for hunting down dinner, the region’s fertile terroir feeds a flourishing restaurant scene.

When to go

June through August is the driest time to visit. Autumn brings the cosy leaf-turning allure of the season to your forested surroundings, and if you’re ready to cock a rifle (or wish to avoid it), December/January is hunting season.

Getting there

  • Planes

Brussels, just over an hour away by road, is the gateway airport for this rural region in south-east Belgium.
  • Automobiles

Rochefort is easily accessible via Belgium’s motorway network from the north, and you’ll want wheels for the freedom to explore its countryside and nip over the border to France.
