Luxury holidays in Sedona

Rocks – turns out, they’re not just a treat for geologists – in Arizona town Sedona, the awe-inspiring striated bluffs and madder-hued mesas are said to have magical powers. It’s all to do with vortices that harness the Earth’s energy, which might set a few eyes rolling. But the rocks’ pull can’t be denied and an industry of alternative therapies – ranging from hypnotherapy to horse hangouts to psychic reading and shamanic colonics – has boomed here; plus the towering, built-on-rock Cathedral of the Holy Cross keeps the faith amid more bohemian beliefs. After cruising the Red Rock Scenic Byway and trekking the canyons, even die-hard skeptics might be spiritually turned. Rocks, turns out they rock.

When to go

From March to May Sedona has a more spring-like feel; arrive then and you’ll avoid scorching temperatures. And, we assume, around this time the psychic energy is at its friskiest.

Getting there

  • Planes

Phoenix Sky Harbor is the closest airport, around a two-hour drive away. Or you could touch down in Tucson, a three-hour drive away.
  • Automobiles

You could hike everywhere, but a car really adds some oomph to those desert drives, and saves your boots some wear and tear. Otherwise there’s no public transport to speak of, so wheels are needed.
