Sequestered on the corner of southwestern Antigua’s picturesque Jolly Harbour, Villa Papillon is a six-bedroom ode to traditional Caribbean style, with contemporary home comforts. Mother-daughter interior-design duo Sarah and Rosie Ward spent three years shaping the indoor-outdoor living and barefoot-luxury concept of this palatial four-floored retreat. Patterned textiles and striking artwork accent an otherwise neutral backdrop and window walls and stacked terraces frame the teal-tinted Caribbean Sea that lulls below. You’ll also have a private butler and chef to keep things running smoothly, so you can salute the sun on your yoga deck, bathe in the infinity pool and plan an itinerary of helicopter tours, ‘sip ‘n’ paint’ sessions, deep-sea fishing or just a cosy evening in (once the little Smiths have been tuckered out, of course).

First Glance

  • Set on the tip of Antigua’s southwest Reeds Point (a four-minute walk from Jolly Beach), this secluded six-bedroom villa has neutral, earthy hues with sand-toned tiling and brightly coloured artworks.
  • Stacked terraces overlook Redonda Island, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Pearns Point.
  • Restored wooden features complement the villa’s more modern spaces, and the two shared living spaces have ample sofa seating.
  • Floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors enhance the inside-outside living feel, inviting in sea breezes and offering expansive Caribbean views throughout.
  • Three bedrooms are located on the second floor; a fully equipped kitchen (including a waffle maker), cinema room, office (with a printer), and living room occupy the first floor; the pool level has two more bedrooms and a bar area, plus a private infinity pool overlooking Redonda Island and the Caribbean Sea; and one level below, you’ll find the final bedroom and the sea-facing sundeck.
  • There's also a small gym with all the basics for a quick workout.
  • All six bedrooms have panoramic vistas and modern ensuite bathrooms with walk-in rainfall showers.
  • A private chef and butler are on hand for all meals, which can be hand-delivered to your deckchair by your personal dumbwaiter.

Sleeping arrangements

  • Six bedrooms are split between three of the four levels; three bedrooms (including the master) are on the top floor, two are on the pool level, and the final room is on the ground floor.
  • Decorated in earthy tones, the master bedroom has vaulted ceilings, a four-poster king-size bed, a two-seater sofa, writing desk, windowed walls on one side and a spacious sea-facing terrace. The tiled ensuite bathroom has a steel-cast freestanding bath tub alongside floor-to-ceiling windows, a large walk-in rainfall shower and twin sinks.
  • On the same level, bedrooms one and two are painted in beachy hues and are furnished with a modern touch. Each room has a king-size bed and an ensuite bathroom with a walk-in rainfall shower, as well as a shared connecting terrace that overlooks neighbouring islands.
  • On the pool level, you’ll find bedrooms three and four. Bedroom three has gentle green hues with bright furnishings and terracotta tiling, while bedroom four is teal-toned with beach-inspired interiors. Both of these rooms have a king-size bed and an ensuite bathroom with a walk-in rainfall shower, as well as sliding doors that open out onto the pool area.
  • The Studio room is the only room on the ground floor. Painted in off-white, its windowed wall overlooks the sea and a back-door balcony offers quick pool access. There are restored wooden furnishings, a king-size bed, small desk, minibar, and an ensuite bathroom with a walk-in rainfall shower.
  • All the bedrooms have air-conditioning and all ensuite bathrooms have Natural Spa amenities.
  • There are three extra rollaway beds that can be added to the rooms (on request).

  • Pairs of parasol-shaded sunloungers sit at either end of the swimming pool, and there’s lounging space and an alfresco dining pavilion.
  • A few steps from the pool, there’s a bar area where your private chef can prepare drinks and meals throughout the day, or utilise the dumbwaiter and have them delivered from the kitchen.

Grounds

  • Outdoor space is in no short supply at Villa Papillon. The upstairs bedrooms all connect to a terrace (one private, one shared between two rooms); and the kitchen and living rooms open out onto an expansive terrace with impressive views. A few steps below, the swimming pool sits by a second dining table, a covered wet bar, and a barbecue and grill.
  • The domed sundeck on the ground floor is ideal for sunrise yoga and meditation.
  • Jolly Beach is a four-minute walk away, and a little further away you’ll find stretches of the Caribbean’s signature sun-bleached beaches.

Location

  • Fly directly into Antigua’s international airport (VC Bird), where a driver will be waiting to whip you across the island towards Jolly Harbour and on to Reeds Point.
  • Private transfers are included, but if you’d rather drive yourself, the airport has a number of car rentals (Avis, Hertz and Capital Cars).
  • During your stay, the house manager can organise helicopter, yacht, catamaran, island, and e-bike tours; hikes; a visit to the Antigua Rainforest, the donkey sanctuary and Stingray City; Reef Riders inflatables tours; scuba diving and snorkelling; deep-sea fishing; and horseback riding.
