Modernist marvel

Sea-view Samui

If you wouldn’t last long in a survival situation, the Samujana Six-Bedroom Villa Plus could be for you. All four of these ultra-exclusive villas have more bathrooms than bedrooms – 10 in some; seven in others – meaning there’s no shortage of spaces to primp and pamper. The sleeping quarters don’t scrimp on luxuries either, with wedge-thick mattresses, contemporary artwork and uninterrupted sea views. Oversized infinity pools are big enough to do laps in (or simply, doing nothing) and there are also private cinemas, pool tables, gyms and gardens to keep you entertained. You’ll have lost your survival instinct entirely by the end – though there’s always the poolside barbecue to master (gas-powered, unfortunately).

First Glance

  • These palatial six-bedroom pads blend minimalist interiors with maximalist services. Neutral, creamy shades mix with eye-catching contemporary art work. Large windows open onto Koh Samui and its surrounding waters.
  • Each of these four villas has a modern, open-plan kitchen: villas 21 and 22 have just one; while villas 28 and 29 have two each. Large dining tables abound: some with space for 20.
  • Vast open-plan living areas come with comfy couches, rustic wooden coffee tables, textured rugs and decorative corals. They all look onto the outdoor space (and abundant sea views) through the villas’ wall-free open fronts.
  • Every villa has a private cinema room with star-worthy chairs and couches and a Nuovo sound system. In Villa 21, you can invite 13 filmgoers to your nightly screenings – even though the villa only sleeps 12.
  • Apart from Villa 29, all have fully kitted-out gyms, furnished with free weights, treadmills, cross-trainers, exercise bikes and balance balls for sculpting the body beautiful.
  • Elsewhere, there are games rooms with Playstation 4s, Wii Us and Apple TVs, plus table tennis tables and analogue board games and playing cards.
  • In case you’re planning on doing any work, there also offices.
  • If it all gets too much, Villa 21 even has its own spa treatment room.

Villa highlights

  • Villa hosts on hand
  • Lap-of-luxury infinity pools
  • Cinemas, gyms and pool tables

Sleeping arrangements

  • Six bedrooms are configured into a series of masters and guests suites.
  • The tone is similar to the rest of the space: minimalist, neutral shades; mid-century-style armchairs; occasional flashes of colour with space-warming contemporary art.
  • Most rooms have sea views. Thanks to its hilltop location, right at the top of the estate, Villa 29 offers an unrivalled vantage point.
  • Bathrooms abound: Villa 21 has 10; villas 22 and 28 have nine. Even the least well furnished has seven. Natural stone and wood lends these spaces an organic feel. Monsoon showers, double sinks, egg-shell baths and Panpuri toiletries from Thailand’s organic spa specialists add a luxurious finish.

Key kit

  • Villa host to arrange activities
  • Turn-down and cleaning service
  • Nannies and childcare
  • In-room minibars
  • Free bottled water, coffee and tea

  • Sea-facing, saltwater infinity pools are a real highlight of these villas, looking out past palms and tropical foliage to Koh Samui’s surrounding waters and humpback islands.
  • All pools are of the angular, L-shaped variety and define the line between outdoor and indoor space.
  • We especially love Villa 29 for its open-air Jacuzzi, sunken into a grassy platform with exceptional views.
  • Sun loungers and day beds provide space to kick back and relax; stone statues create a serene feel.

  • Each villa is landscaped into tropical hillside, with exotic palms and plants to help create a quintessential Thai feel.
  • All have landscaped gardens – Villa 21’s are the most extensive.
  • Poolside gas barbecues and outdoor tables are on hand for alfresco dining. Villa 28 has an impressive, full-service outdoor kitchen/barbecue space.
  • We love Villa 29 for its rooftop deck – ideal for nighttime star-gazing
  • Each villa has free on-site parking.

  • Situated on the quiet north-east coast of Koh Samui – Thailand’s second-largest island – Samujana overlooks the iridescent green waters of the Gulf of Thailand. Samui’s iconic Big Buddha statue and adjoining Phra Yai temple complex are close by. Your private villa host can arrange everything from raw chocolate workshops to private muay Thai boxing classes. You can also try your hand at cocktail making, cookery and DJing in various masterclasses.
  • Samujana is 10 minutes from Koh Samui airport, which is linked to Bangkok by regular flights from a host of international operators. Contact the Smith24 team for flights and connections. If you want to arrive in style, Samujana can also arrange a private jet and helicopter from Bangkok, Phuket, Hong Kong, Singapore or further afield.
  • Five minutes’ walk from the villas, down a set of steps, you can also access Hanuman Bay, with its sheltered south-east Asian waters and sunbathing spots.
  • Samui isn’t short on high-end restaurants: try Ocean Kiss or Tree Tops at Anantara Lawana Resort & Spa and Dining on the Rocks at Six Senses Samui. We also love expat-favourite the Larder for its Thai comfort food and peanut butter martinis; Prego Samui at the Amari Palm Reef Resort One for Italian-style pastas and pizzas; and Japanese-inspired Namu at the W Retreat Koh Samui. Tucked within a hand-carved, antique Thai house in the fisherman’s village of Bophut, you’ll also find Bophut with seafood and sea views to die for.
