Built on the ruins of a mediaeval castle, Villa Castello lives up to its ancient heritage – faithfully renovated rooms have stone walls, beamed ceilings and authentic Tuscan decoration. Situated on the Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco estate, this rustic Italian casa may have a centuries-old history, but it’s far from out of date: whip up a feast of antipasti in the modern kitchen or stretch out by the heated infinity pool. On summer nights, have dinner alfresco in the lavender-scented garden with views of the verdant Val d’Orcia; in winter, curl up by the living room’s redbrick fireplace with a classic Umberto Eco tome and a glass of local Brunello wine.

  • All the villa’s common parts (including a small powder room) are situated on the ground floor.
  • The cosy living room has a beamed ceiling, tiled floor and working fireplace; a green sofa and striped armchairs are grouped around a studded, leather coffee table. Large French windows lead out onto the garden.
