Perched on a hilltop amid the 5,000-acre Castiglion del Bosco estate, Villa Alba is a rustic farmhouse with an eclectic heritage. Built from centuries-old Tuscan stone, this casa’s ancient foundations have been brought up to date by founders Massimo and Chiara Ferragamo, inheritors of the luxury Italian shoe dynasty. Rough stone walls, beamed ceilings and tiled floors are in keeping with the villa’s traditional, Tuscan charm; a slick kitchen and a heated infinity pool add a modern touch. Kick back on the pergola-shaded terrace with an ice-cold bellini and admire the panoramic views of Unesco-listed Val d’Orcia from the verdant, lavender-scented gardens.

First Glance

  • This cosy, 263sq m villa is set over two floors, and there’s also a spacious guesthouse. The decor is simple and Tuscan-inspired: beamed ceilings, wooden furniture and soft, neutral colours are in every room.
  • On the ground floor of the main house is the spacious, butter-yellow living room which has a tiled floor, beamed ceiling and large windows looking onto the garden. A velvet sofa and striped chairs are grouped around a wooden coffee table, facing the working fireplace.
  • Through an archway lined with bookcases is the kitchen, which has a range cooker (with a red-tiled splashback) and wooden cabinets. High-quality cookware, cutlery and crockery are supplied. There’s also a microwave, dishwasher, sink, washing machine, kettle, grill and Nespresso coffee-maker. In the middle of the room, a round, wooden dining table is surrounded by comfortable, red-upholstered chairs.
  • There’s also a powder room on the ground floor.
  • The Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco hotel is closed between 27 November and 12 April. Villas rented during this period will have a delivery of welcome groceries; two hours’ daily housekeeping; breakfast cooked in the villa (on request and for an extra charge); concierge service between 9am and 5pm; free newspaper app for Android and Apple devices; free WiFi and 24-hour security. Winter activities on the estate (at an additional cost) include wine tasting and tours of the winery, and access to the golf club.
