Soaring views are in no short supply at Lodge Lorien, where lapping Lake Wakatipu borders 450-acres of pristine gardens and windowed walls provide endless gaze-worthy angles. Sitting between Glenorchy and Queenstown, in the Otago region, this four-bedroom lodge is shaped with local quarried schist stone, accented with wooden beams, and finished with kaleidoscopic-Kiwi artwork that add a characterful touch. The homespun feel comes out in wood-burning fireplaces and a pouffe-filled cinema room; but you’re unlikely to spend days residing inside when heli-skiing down Rees Valley, kayaking through Fiordland National Park, and chopper-fuelled travels are on the itinerary.

First Glance

  • It’s hard to notice much when such dramatic views draw the eye at this 1,100-square-metre lodge; but if you manage to cast a glance within its walls, you’ll find four spacious bedrooms, all with walk-in wardrobes and grand ensuite bathrooms, on the ground floor, as well as a formal eight-seater dining room, living room and fully equipped kitchen with dark cabinetry and an industrial finish that’s warmed by a restored wooden breakfast bar.
  • Downstairs, there’s an in-house spa with a hydrotherapy shower, sauna and space for on-call masseurs to set up; a spacious games room, where little Smiths can play a (perhaps informal) round of pool, while the adults linger by the stocked bar or sample a local Pinot Noir from the wine cellar; and a cinema room that speaks for itself.
  • Modern minimalism exudes, but wood panelling, cosy furnishings, and log-burning fires add a cosy feel throughout.
  • On-call service means you won’t be short of supplies; door-to-door grocery shopping can be arranged, a private chef is available for any number of meals, activity-packed itineraries are on offer, or stay in and request an in-room massage.
  • And of course, the property’s panoramic windowed walls and sliding doors ensure you’re never far from a soul-soothing view.

Sleeping arrangements

This room also connects to the den, where there’s a gas fireplace.
  • Down a sectioned-off hallway, you’ll find the final three rooms. The 40-square-metre Greenstone room has two twin beds (can be combined into a super-king) and doors leading out to the lodge’s wraparound terrace with views of Greenstone Valley. There’s also a walk-in wardrobe and a spacious ensuite bathroom with an open shower and standalone bath tub overlooking Round Peak and the Thomson Mountains.
  • The 46-square-metre Humboldts room has a super-king bed and dramatic views over the Humboldts and Thomson mountain ranges. There’s a walk-in wardrobe and a large ensuite bathroom, where you’ll find a double-open shower and a standalone bath tub.
  • The final 40-square-metre Larkins room has a super-king bed, east-facing views over Mount Larkins and direct access to the courtyard (where an open fireplace awaits). The room also has a walk-in wardrobe and an open shower.
