Three-Bedroom Private Villas Pita Linggar and Giri Antara are perched high on the hills of Bali’s Como Shambhala Estate: a wellness retreat nestled in a clearing just north of the bustling artists' town of Ubud. The villas put a modern spin on traditional Indonesian design, with furnishings of dark-hued wood set against whitewashed walls and light fabrics. The architects have also made smart use of the location, maximising the sense of space with rooms that flow outwards onto terraces overlooking the surrounding jungle. With all this in mind, these villas really start to live up to their names – Pita Linggar and Giri Antara are Sanskrit for ‘Golden Space’ and ‘Distant Mountain’ respectively.

  • Each villa has 299sq m of living space set over two floors; the total area including all outdoor space is a generous 624sq m. Within, both have a generously-sized and well-furnished living area; a fully-stocked kitchen; and a powder room. The interiors contain a mixture of traditional Balinese architecture and more modern flourishes – the traditional thatched ceilings, for example, are cleverly contrasted with modernist, Scandi-style furniture.

  • In both villas, the expansive master bedrooms are on the first floor. Measuring 73sq m, they have floor-to-ceiling windows that run half the length of the room, ensuring that these large rooms are flooded with light during the day. Both have an indoor-outdoor bathroom with a bath tub and separate shower, as well as access to private terraces overlooking the garden.
  • Bedroom 3, the guest bedroom, is on the ground floor. It has an ensuite-bathroom containing a bath tub and separate shower, and has direct access to the lawn at the front of the property.

  • Car parking is available at the lobby of the main estate – a five-minute walk or short buggy-ride away.
  • The properties command excellent views from the terraces, pool and garden thanks to the villas’ elevated position.

  • Como Shambhala Estate is a 20-minute drive from nearby Ubud, which is found towards the centre of the island.
  • The island’s only airport, Ngurah Rai, is a 90-minute drive away; transfers can be arranged with the Smith24 Team (call 24 hours a day on 03331 306 820).
  • The surrounding landscape is spectacular, and best enjoyed on foot.
  • Slightly further afield – but still well worth seeing – are the tiny Gili islands, also known by their other moniker, ‘the turtle capital of the world’. Reached in just two hours by boat, they make for an excellent day trip.
