The classic and cosy Maisonette La Piccionaia at Borgo Pignano in Tuscany is a split-level sanctuary in view of Volterra. Nearby mediaeval towns aside, there’s plenty to keep you busy in and around the hamlet’s 750 acres of orchards, olive groves, waterfalls and woodlands. The hotel pool was carved from a limestone quarry and has a handily located bar, perfectly placed for post-swim sundowners. If you’ve got the kids in tow, the family pool is conveniently close to the maisonette – as are the stables, for any accompanying budding young equestrians.

Sleeping arrangements

  • The master bedroom is upstairs and has a queen-size bed and ensuite bathroom. It has high ceilings and looks out on the hamlet’s bocce (like an Italian boules) court.
  • There’s also a low-ceilinged loft with Japanese tatami mats.
  • The two bedrooms share a bathroom.

Key kit

  • Air-conditioning in the bedrooms.
  • Safe.
  • Twice-daily housekeeping.

Grounds

  • The maisonette has a shared outdoor living and dining space.
  • There’s no private pool at the cottage, but the hotel’s family-friendly pool is close to La Piccionaia. This sparkling infinity pool was carved out of an ancient limestone quarry (with some of the sedimentary surplus used for the terrace).
  • Views of the surrounding countryside.
  • There’s parking at the main hotel entrance; valet available.
  • Small pets are allowed.

Location

  • The villa is in the Tuscan countryside, close to the Berignone Forest reserve.
  • It’s inland, but the coast is an hour away by car.
  • Fly into Florence or Pisa airports (both are around an hour and 15 minutes’ drive away).
  • Nearby towns include Pisa, Siena and Volterra; Florence is further but, as you’re probably aware, definitely worth the trip.
  • To reach the property by train, take a Trenitalia service from Florence, Siena, Empoli or Pisa to the Poggibonsi-San Gimignano station, which is a 35-minute drive away (www.trenitalia.com).
