Down by the estate’s erstwhile water well, the Maisonette Il Pozzo at the luxurious Borgo Pignano hotel offers a secluded space from which to admire the grassy curves and horizon-set hilltop fortresses of this rural Tuscan region. There are three floors spanning, from top to bottom, a master bedroom; a kids’ bedroom with three single beds; and a living area with beamed ceilings, cream sofas and alcove walls. There’s a leafy terrace with a dining table for outdoor meals if you can be bothered to use your kitchen; if not, the creative chef is putting on a decent (and locally sourced) alternative at the Belvedere restaurant.

Grounds

  • The maisonette’s surrounded by greenery: flowering, bushes, mature trees, lush lawns. Its terrace, set under a picturesque pergola, has a dining table that seats six.
  • There’s no private pool at the cottage, but the main hotel’s infinity one, which has been carved out of an ancient limestone quarry and has verdant views of the neighbouring fields, makes up for it. The main pool has a bar and garden. There’s also a smaller, additional pool for children under 12.
  • There’s parking at the main hotel entrance; valet available.
  • Small pets are allowed.

Location

  • The villa is in the Tuscan countryside, close to the Berignone Forest reserve. It’s inland, but the coast is an hour away by car.
  • Fly into Florence or Pisa airports (both are around an hour and 15 minutes’ drive away).
  • Nearby towns include Pisa, Siena and Volterra; Florence is further but, as you’re probably aware, worth the trip.
  • To reach the property by train, take a Trenitalia service from Florence, Siena, Empoli or Pisa to the Poggibonsi-San Gimignano station, which is a 35-minute drive away.
  • The hotel can provide airport transfers; prices start from €162 each way for two passengers.
