There’s more to Thai paradise isle Koh Phangan than its full moon to celebrate – its gold-dust beaches, fairy-tale jungle waterfalls and lustrous coating of coconut palms. Coyly peeking out from one of these dense groves is tropical-modernist marvel Anaia Villa, an estate that doesn’t skimp on life’s small and significant luxuries. Aside from the main house, with a cinema room and infinity pool with a bar, there are serene garden pavilions, a yoga shala, spa and hammam, viewing platform overlooking the Gulf of Thailand and rollicking acres of mango trees and shaggy palms. Plus, with five bedrooms (one in the villa, and four in the grounds) that each enjoy a spectacular aspect. But, it’s ravishing and responsible, built contoured to the land (a giant boulder has been made a feature in the living room) and operating as greenly as its verdant surrounds.

Location

  • Anaia Villa is secluded amid plentiful palms in the hills of south-west Koh Phangan island.
  • The easiest way to reach the island is to fly into Koh Samui’s airport (direct flights arrive here from Hong Kong and Singapore, but most international visitors transfer via Bangkok) then take the 30-minute ferry ride (or 20-minute speedboat ride) over to Koh Phangan’s port.
  • You’re just a five-minute scooter ride from lively port town Thong Sala (home to the island’s only boxing stadiums, if that’s your bag), where ferries arrive from Surat Thani and Donsak on the mainland, and all ports in Koh Samui. Here you can explore the deliciously scented food stalls of the night market each Saturday or admire the serene artistry of temple complex Wat Rat Charoen.
  • Villa staff can help you to make the most of the island by planning myriad adventures: macaque- and monitor lizard-spotting treks by the Haad Rin Hills, refreshing bathes in the Phaeng or Wang Sai waterfalls, survival expeditions in untamed parts of the jungle with a local guide, zippy scooter trips (a driving licence is required), daredevil climbs up mountains and coastal rock faces, mountain and motor biking, paddle-boarding, kayaking, jet-skiing, water-skiing, wakeboarding, bamboo cooking in the jungle and private boat hire for scenic scuba-dives.
  • Koh Phangan is famed for its dance-till-dawn Full Moon parties – held the night before or after the celestial body reaches its curviest phase
