When to go
Toto were right – sometimes the rains do fall in Africa, specifically from November to March. For clement temperatures and more chance of The Lion King IRL scenes at the watering-hole, visit in April or May.

Getting there
You’ll need to book flights to Cape Town International, the trip’s starting point (or the Smith24 Team can arrange those for you). There are direct flights from the UK and Europe, and you’ll only lose two hours’ time difference – so there’s no jet lag to slow you down. Flights from the US stop over in Paris or Johannesburg. Inland travel is by chauffeured – blissfully air-conditioned – car with a personal, English-speaking driver; there are two short internal flights, too.

Packing tips

  • A breezy wardrobe of cottons and linens
  • Waterproof gear for kayaking comfortably in
  • Hiking boots (just in case you get the urge to scale Table Mountain)
The ultimate South African honeymoon

Day 1–4: Cape Town

Kick off your honeymoon in a city with more gifts than your registry. Cape Town has mountains to climb, hip bars and cafés, beautiful beaches and a climate that lets you make the most of them. Your hotel, Cape View Clifton, is ideally placed near all the city’s assets.

Your hotel…

Your hotel…

From the terrace of this tip-of-Cape Town hotel the 12 Apostles peaks gaze stonily out to the Atlantic along a curve of coast. Boutique hotel Cape View Clifton overlooks a snapshot of beaches, greenery and mountains, so as its name suggests, it’ll make you look.

Smith Extra A bottle of wine on arrival

Day 1 Your private driver and a porter will meet you at Cape Town International to chauffeur you to Cape View Clifton (around a 40-minute drive) for a three-night stay in South Africa’s fast-paced capital. Feeling active? We can arrange a hike through Table Mountain’s ravines and over its stony crags, to its towering 1,000-metre-high summit (around a three-and-a-half-hour climb).

Day 2 You’ll feel especially buoyant today as you take to sea in a kayak. Starting at Simon’s Town, your private guide will equip you with paddles and lead you to Boulders Beach – past penguin colonies and sailor-saluted capes – before mountain zebra- and baboon-spotting in one of SA’s scenic reserves. We’ll take you to an in-the-know local seafood spot for lunch, where you can whale-watch as you dine.

Day 3 Rise and wine! Today, we’ll take you on a private tour of South Africa’s oldest wine region, Constantia, and you’ll get there in style: this way sir, madame: your helicopter awaits…

Sip-hop from estate to estate, pausing at Steenberg Farm for lunch washed down with their esteemed sauvignon blanc. Stop by Klein Constantia estate for a tot of sweet tipple Vin Constance.

Day 4 Load your beach towels and newly-acquired bottles of wine into your bags and take one last look at the mountains – today you’ll head north on a two-hour flight to Sabi Sand Game Reserve.

The ultimate South African honeymoon

Day 4–7: Sabi Sand Game Reserve

Kruger may be the unimaginably vast, go-to game reserve for South Africa’s poster-child animals, but to its south, Sabi Sand is a relatively cosy (650 square kilometres to Kruger’s 19,000) collection of creature-featuring parks.

It feels a little more exclusive, not least for its staggeringly luxurious stay, Ulusaba, where you’ll hole up for three wonderful nights.

Your hotel…

Your hotel…

The point-y thatched roofs of Ulusaba retreat’s guest dwellings poke out from a koppie (hillside) thickly covered in jackalberry trees; the perfect camouflage for spying the reserve’s furred, tusked and feathered residents.

Smith Extra A personalised Ulusaba Encountered book – a picture-laden guide to the reserve

Day 4 After touchdown at Kruger Mpumalanga Airport (a two-hour flight from Cape Town), a personal driver will escort you to Ulusaba, 30 minutes’ drive away: a resort set over acres of bushland. The stay has its own hippopotami watering-hole, an elevated spa with views and an extensive wine cellar: spend your first day investigating all three.

Day 5 Your room rate includes twice-daily game drives through Sabi Sand, one in the (very early) AM, the second after lunch. The Big Five roam here, so keep your camera poised. Come evening, swap ‘it was this big’ stories with your fellow guests over a candlelit dinner.

Day 6 In between game drives, request a walking safari to get a closer look at elephant herds, grazing zebra, lazing cheetahs and maybe even the reserve’s elusive black rhinos. In the evening, turn your gaze skywards as a ranger who’s well-read in constellations guides you through the stars.

Day 7 From the bush to the beach: today, you’ll jet off from the east coast to gloriously green isle Mauritius.

The ultimate South African honeymoon

Day 7–14: Mauritius

Set your clocks to ‘island time’ as you hop offshore to Mauritius, where mountains roamed by exotic creatures and coated with lush greenery protrude from vivid aquamarine waters where dolphins are known to play. The only thing that’ll put a bigger smile on your face is your five-star stay, Constance Le Prince Maurice.

Your hotel…

Your hotel…

You’ve arrived, your majesties… We’re not sure who the titular prince is at Constance Le Prince Maurice, but we like his style. Secluded stilted villas, a floating restaurant and decadent spa are welcome enhancements to Mauritius’ already abundant treasures.

Smith Extra A fruit basket, bottle of wine; for GoldSmiths, champagne and a 30-minute back or foot massage each

Day 7 You’ll fly to the Mauritius’ Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam international airport from Johannesburg (a four-hour flight); from here, a private driver will chauffeur you to Constance Le Prince Maurice. The drive is around an hour by car, but the coastal route is so scenic the journey will fly by.

Take a second to run around your suite and jump on the bed, then kick your honeymoon into gear with your welcome-gift wine or a rum-soaked cocktail.

Day 8 And, relax… You decide what you’d like to do on your island break. We recommend some serious sunbathing time on one of the hotel’s white-sand beaches.

Day 9 Mauritius has a rich history worth delving into; if you can’t spend all day sunbathing, we can arrange a trip to Domaine Les Pailles where you’ll glimpse the island’s French-colonial past.

Day 10 The resort’s drinks list errs towards fine South African wines; as the sommelier has worked tirelessly to assemble a cellar even a casual oenophile would get misty-eyed over, it’d be rude not to partake in a tasting. We can liaise with the hotel to ensure tots of new- and old-world wines await you. Monsieur sommelier will be delighted…

Day 11 Today take a gentle wander to a nearby cove for secluded sun-worshipping, followed by a little friendly competitive beach volleyball.

Day 12 So, you’ve idled on the beaches and acquainted yourself with the wine list; today dedicate yourself to the island’s most sippable export… We can arrange a tour of the Rhumerie de Chamarel where sugar-cane is expertly turned into sweet, sweet rum; after, work off your exertions with a Rum Spirit ritual, a fragrant two-hour treatment in the hotel's Sisley spa.

Day 13 Madagascar flaunts its diverse flora and fauna, but Mauritius’ wildlife is far from as dead as a dodo (erm, even if the native dodo is sadly deceased). Brightly-plumed birds nest in its forests, kestrels soar above the canopy and giant tortoises plod through the undergrowth. We can arrange a jeep safari on request.

Day 14 Today, dust the sand from your flip-flops and pack up your memories of paradise before the journey back to Mauritius’ main airport for your flight home.
