Laid-back and light-filled

Bang on the beachfront

Tropical gardens and white-sand beaches on an idyllic car-free island. It sounds like something from both a foreign land and a bygone era, but this is modern-day Tresco, one of the Isles of Scilly near Cornwall. Each of the One-bedroom Tresco Sea Garden Cottages makes a blissful base for a couple or small family, with bright and breezy interiors and a sunny terrace outside. The hotel has facilities aplenty, from the indoor pool to the tennis courts, and the island is your playground to explore on foot, by bike, or in the saddle of a docile steed.

First Glance

  • There’s an understated quality to the interiors of each cottage, with solid-oak flooring, Oka furniture, hand-painted tiles and intricate bedspreads by a local designer who also supplies fabrics to Liberty. Lloyd Loom wicker furniture adds to the homey charm, and bright and beachy artwork provides the pops of colour.
  • The kitchen in each cottage is kitted out with an oven, hob, fridge, microwave, dishwasher, kettle and toaster. The cupboards are stacked with copious amounts of crockery, cutlery and glassware.
  • You can choose to self-cater, go B&B, or include half-board meals at the Ruin Café next door.

Villa highlights

  • Car-free tropical island
  • Beachside location
  • Family activities

Sleeping arrangements

  • The bed can be made up as a super-king or twins, depending on how well you’re getting on. From your pillow, you look straight through the wall-to-wall windows and out to sea. Bookworms will head for the balcony, which is covered and sheltered from the breeze.
  • Two little’uns can sleep on the sofa bed in the downstairs living room.
  • Linen is changed daily.

Key kit

  • Flatscreen TV.
  • DVD player.
  • iPod dock.
  • Board games.
  • Ren bath products.

  • You have full access to the complex grounds and facilities, including the heated indoor pool, sheltered beach, sauna, Jacuzzi, gym, croquet lawn, sailing centre and tennis court (just ask to borrow racquets and balls).

  • This is the tricky bit, and also part of the fun. You can fly into the neighbouring island of St Mary’s by taking the Skybus from Exeter, Newquay or Land’s End airports. Alternatively, take the Scillonian ferry from Penzance; it takes two-and-a-half to three hours. From St Mary’s, hop on a boat to Tresco, and take the tractor service to your cottage.
  • Once you’re there, car-free Tresco is all yours to explore – hire bikes to pedal around the largely flat island, or stay on your own two feet with walks along the endless white-sand beaches.
  • Whatever you do, don’t miss the Tresco Abbey Garden – a tropical paradise with over 20,000 plants from all over the world. The entry fee is included with your stay.
