Setting

Black-sand beach

The Soori Residence, Six-Bedroom Villa is set in tropical gardens at the otherworldly Soori Bali hotel, with a twinkling black-sand beach and the roaring ocean on one side, and emerald-green rice paddies on the other. The interiors are masterfully designed with traditional touches to their modern minimalism, and each bedroom has views to put you in the very best of moods each morning. Resisting the infinity pool is almost impossible, unless you’ve booked a Balinese indulgence in the private spa. For dinner, gorge on local favourites at open-air restaurant Coast, or dine finely at Ombak.

First Glance

  • It’s Balinese minimalism to the max, with zen-full symmetry, clean-cut lines and a balanced blend of pure whites and dark native woods.
  • Woven mats and traditional artworks contrast with modern lighting and cuboid sofas.
  • Living and dining areas flow seamlessly into one another, and have floor-to-ceiling glass doors opening onto the terrace and pool decks.
  • Indulge in spa therapy without leaving your own patch; there’s a calm-as-can-be couples’ treatment room inside the villa.
  • The private gym has a range of cardio and muscle-conditioning kit; it looks onto the inner courtyard.
  • The kitchen is equipped with a microwave, Nespresso machine and traditional coffee maker. If you fancy a night in, call for a private chef to cook up an in-villa feast.

  • Outdoor shower.

Grounds

  • Open-air poolside living and dining pavilion.
  • Landscaped tropical gardens filled with feature displays of tall grasses, blossoming trees and neat hedges along stone border walls.
  • Outdoor bar and good ’n’ proper coal barbecue.
  • The terrace faces west – handy for the spectacular sunsets.
  • There’s no parking at the villa, but plenty of space in the main hotel car park.

Location

  • Soori Bali is on the unspoilt south-west coast of the Indonesian island, with a backdrop of terraced rice fields and the volcanic Mount Batukaru looming in the distance.
  • Ngurah Rai International Airport is a 90-minute drive to the south, just beyond the capital city, Denpasar. There are direct flights to and from lots of major cities in Europe and Asia, including Emirates from the Middle East, Qantas from Australia, and Singapore Airlines from, er, Singapore.
  • The hotel offers free airport transfers by car; if you prefer a chopper, that’s an option too. You can hire a car at the airport, but you might be better off letting someone else weave in and out of the bumps and potholes – a private driver is around US$30 a day.
  • The Leisure Concierge staff know exactly what’s what in the local area – just ask them if you’d like to arrange tours to temples, markets and more around the Tabanan Regency.
