Long before Palma was the buzzy capital of Mallorca, Sineu was where it was at – and Son Riera, a meticulously restored townhouse, is where all those 13th-century sorts would have wanted to stay. Original details abound, with equally charming modern flourishes (Farrow & Ball shades, subway tiles and wallpaper by Matthew Williamson, Jean Paul Gaultier and Christian Lacroix). Many of the bedrooms are family-friendly suites, there’s an elaborate outdoor kitchen and dining situation going on and the pool is simply perfection. Sineu may no longer be the royalty-approved capital, but it’s still a great base for island exploration – and there’s even a train station to whizz you through to Palma.
