This enormous Superior Apartment is part of Locanda Rossa, a family-friendly resort estate set in a blissfully bucolic patch of Tuscany. Inside, neutral tones and natural materials sit happily alongside modern design features under the painted beamed ceilings, and there’s a private garden and barbecue for alfresco dining. A short walk takes you to the hotel and its child-friendly facilities, including a family pool, playground and football pitch. Grown-ups have a separate pool to themselves, as well as a gym and Turkish spa with another pool indoors. An ample Continental breakfast is laid out in the conservatory each morning, and the hotel restaurant cooks up sumptuous slow food for lunch and dinner.

First Glance

  • The striking steel staircase is the centrepiece of the apartment, dividing the kitchen and living area in two and twisting up to the principal bedrooms and down to the basement suite. The modernist feel extends to the slender, sculpted floor lamps and muted white-and-brown colour scheme, but there are also nods to rustic setting with stone tiles, decorative earthenware and a chunky dark-wood coffee table.
  • The split-level set up over three floors is ideal for families.
  • The kitchen is kitted out with an oven, microwave, Nespresso coffee machine, fridge-freezer, kettle and toaster, along with a full set of crockery, cutlery and glassware.
  • There’s a separate laundry room with washing machine.

Villa highlights

  • Triplex family apartment
  • Idyllic countryside location
  • Three pools and spa on-site

Sleeping arrangements

  • There are three bedrooms altogether – two upstairs and one in the basement – each with a private bathroom. Baby cots (free) can be added to any of them.
  • The upstairs bedrooms have a neutral palette of white, grey and hot-chocolate brown, with pencil drawings on the walls and marble and chrome features in the bathroom. Downstairs in the basement bedroom there’s a more modernist look, with svelte floor lamps, a wood-slat headboard above the double bed, and tiered shelves forming the bedside tables.

Key kit

  • LCD TV with satellite channels.
  • Free WiFi.
  • Minibar.
  • Air-conditioning.
  • Bathrobes.
  • CO Bigelow bath products.

Poolside

  • There are three pools at the hotel: a large one for families is in a garden setting away from the main building, with an all-action playground to one side. Grown-ups (over-14s) have the pool by the conservatory to themselves, and there are plenty of sunloungers for snoozing the days away. For an indoor dip in soothing surroundings, head to the spa pool (over-16s only).

Grounds

  • Cook up a feast on the outdoor barbecue and devour it under the parasol or out in the sun in the private garden.
  • There’s private parking for two cars at the villa itself, and space for more outside the main hotel building.
  • You’re out in the Tuscan countryside here, with olive groves all around and not a sound to be heard, apart from the occasional 'eee-or' from the resident donkey.

Location

  • Locanda Rossa is 130 kilometres north of Rome, up the Tyrrhenian Sea coast. The best airport to fly into is Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumincino, which is on the right side of Rome and cuts the drive down to around one hour. Alternatively, head for Rome’s other airport, Ciampino – the drive to the villa is around 90 minutes.
  • This a quiet, still-to-be-discovered corner of Tuscany, but the local area is dotted with first-class vineyards, olive groves, and authentic osteria eateries. A five-minute drive away is Capalbio, a hilltop village steeped in medieval history and crumbly-walled character. Unspoilt beaches are around half an hour by car, and vintage Chianti country begins about the same distance inland.
