Villa Deliziosa might sound like something out of the Italian version of Hansel and Gretel, but we can assure you it’s made of gleaming white tufo limestone, not gingerbread. There is a certain fairy-tale quality though, as the residence is set at the storybook village hotel Borgo Egnazia, on the sun-baked coast of Puglia. Each morning a massaie butler arrives to serve breakfast, and every villa comes with a dedicated adviser to give you the heads-up on the local highlights. The villa has its own pool set on a flora-lined patio, and there are also four large pools (one just for families) around the borgo. A free shuttle runs back and forth to the two hotel beaches, and grown-ups can escape to their choice of the spa or coast-side golf course.

First Glance

  • Each Villa Deliziosa has three bedrooms; two on the first floor and one on the lower ground floor.
  • The kitchen is fully kitted out with everything you need to cook and prepare meals, and has a farmhouse table fit for the whole family.
  • There’s also a separate dining area, with a whitewashed wooden table and chairs set between feature vases by the fireplace.
  • There are two living areas. On the light-flooded ground floor, classical armchairs and chaises-longues sit alongside glasswork and traditional local earthenware. The lower level is a softly-lit snuggery, with sink-into sofas in front of the stone-set home theatre system.
  • There’s a family bathroom on the ground floor, as well as an ensuite bathroom with each bedroom.
  • The small studio in the basement, which can be arranged as an soothing, candle-lit massage room on request.

Location

  • Borgo Egnazia is in the region of Puglia, on southern Italy’s east coast. In terms of the boot shape of Italy, we’re talking Achilles tendon territory.
  • It’s 53 kilometres from Brindisi airport to Borgo Egnazia; hotel transfers cost €130 for a car (up to three passengers), or €150 for a minivan (up to eight passengers). Alternatively, fly into Bari, which is 60km away from the hotel.
  • For self-drivers, the best route is the SS16, which links Bari and Brindisi. Come off at Savelletri/Stazione di Fasano and follow the yellow signs for Borgo Egnazia and San Domenico golf course.
  • The nearest train station is Fasano, which is five kilometres away. Regular regional trains go to Monopoli, Lecce and Bari; check Trenitalia for details and tickets.
  • Hop on your bikes and explore the hotel by pedal-power, or hire a car to hit up the hilltop villages dotted around this corner of Puglia (the picks of the bunch are Ostuni, Martina Franca and Alberobello).
