At the bottom of a flower-lined pathway, The Cottage is a peaceful retreat for four in the Georgian harbour village of Charlestown, Cornwall. Embracing the seaside setting, hosts David and Antonia have cast their keen eyes over the Grade II-listed townhouse and filled it with nautical furnishings and decorations: you’ll find a ship-style bed crafted by carpenter David upstairs, and a carefully curated collection of seaside curiosities dotted throughout. Dine by lantern light under an antique ship sign in the kitchen and admire the bespoke buoy decorations while cosying up by the wood fire in the living room. If the interiors give you a feel for the seafaring life, your helpful hosts will happily help organise boat trips, kayaking excursions and surfing lessons on the Cornish coast.

First Glance

  • Simply sophisticated, the all-white interiors of this Grade II-listed Georgian cottage are expertly decorated by owners Antonia and David. Lovingly restored antiques, David’s custom-made furnishings and an array of nautical objet d'art are paired with must-have mod-cons, including luxurious White Company fabrics, underfloor heating and a fully-equipped kitchen.
  • With heated slate floors, the fully equipped kitchen comes with a gas hob, an electric oven, a fridge, microwave, dishwasher and every utensil you could possibly think of. You’ll also find a wine collection, specially selected by a local sommelier, on offer at reasonable prices.
  • The oak-floored sitting room has a cosy two-seater sofa and a pair armchairs beside the wood-burning stove. There’s a TV in the corner, but you could just as easily entertain yourself perusing the urchin-topped lights, seashell encrusted miniatures and other sea-themed curiosites dotted around the property.
  • The washing machine, tumble dryer, iron and ironing board are in the old laundry outbuilding, and the log store and original outhouse, which still works, are in the other two.

  • Decorated with nautical features – we particularly like the lantern light above the king-size bed – the master bedroom has a king-size bed and overlooks the front garden.
  • Slightly smaller, the second room has a pitched ceiling with exposed beams and a bespoke double bed handmade by David to resemble a bed on a ship; the bed is best suited to kids or cuddle-up couples.
  • Both beds are topped with luxurious linens from the White Company.
  • The two rooms share a bathroom with a cast iron bath tub and an overhead rainfall shower.
