Our favourite rooms

East-facing rooms are good for those raring to hit the slopes – not only do you get magnificent mountain views, but you can see how busy the ski-lift is. If you’re on a lengthy ski trip, or you’re staying with a group of friends, the four-bedroom rooms with a washer and dryer offer all the creature comforts you’ll need.

Poolside

Two. There’s a heated outdoor pool sitting on a slope overlooking evergreen views, with the hotel’s ski lift bobbing overhead. The pool is flanked by day-beds, with a cosy pavilion you can rent to escape the high-altitude sun, and a hot tub. The Nest Lounge and Café is just a few steps away and drinks can be ordered direct to your day-bed. The spa also has a heated indoor infinity pool with a waterfall.

Packing tips

Stylish ski gear for on-piste posturing and don’t forget some sunblock – it may be snowy but the sun still burns.

The Three to Four-Bedroom Suites with kitchenettes and a washer and dryer provide plenty of space and privacy for family groups.

Crèche

The Treehouse Kids’ Adventure Centre serves as a crèche, accepting children of all ages for ski lessons. Under-6s ski for free.

No need to pack

If you forget any ski equipment for your little Smith, you can easily replace it at the on-site ski boutique.

Sustainability efforts

Absolutely – the restaurant uses humanely raised meat and sustainable produce, and fryer oil is re-used as biofuel; ecologically sound light bulbs, energy-efficient cleaners and cleaning products are used; swimming pools create their own chlorine with an electric current and salt; there’s an electric-car charging station; rooms use motion-sensor thermostats; and the hotel holds Gold LEED certification.

Food and Drink

Top Table

In the morning nab a window seat where you can sigh over snowy vistas. In the evening take a prime people-watching space by the perimeter wall banquette.

Dress Code

Colorado casual wear for the Nest Bar & Grill – think chunky knits and riding boots or Ralph Lauren-style plaid. For Toro Kitchen & Lounge, don something sparkly (and a blazer for Mr Smith).

Hotel restaurant

The Toro Kitchen & Lounge is a sultry, warmly coloured restaurant, divided by a wall lined with wine bottles and lit by low-hanging chandeliers. Chef Richard Sandoval serves up Latin American cuisine, spruced up for the Aspen set, with homey-yet-haute delicacies, such as whiskey-buttered steaks; salmon with cauliflower purée, bacon-chilli jam and achiote ponzu; and a candied-hazelnut and tres leches sponge with orange foam – washed down with barrel-aged cocktails, hot toddies or mulled wine. For breakfast, eggs are cooked how you like ‘em, plus there’s pecan-smoked bacon, caramelised-banana French toast, berry-topped pancakes and more, washed down with a prickly-pear mimosa. More casual eatery Nest Bar & Grill serves lunch alfresco – poolside or on the slopes of Assay Hill – with a menu of quesadillas, homemade chicken noodle soup, grilled-cheese sandwiches and beef stews. Light bites and drinks are also available from the bar for peckish pit stops. Set within Toro’s bar, Café V has slow-roasted coffees, homemade pastries and paninis made with fresh artisan sourdough.

Hotel bar

Toro’s bar is the sexier choice for date night with a worldly wine list, classic cocktails and toasty libations await. The mulled wine with slugs of hennessy and cognac, or barrel-aged-mezcal-spiked negroni will warm you après-ski, or take it a step further with a tequila flight. At Nest, get your mittens on a jalapeño-infused Paloma, hot cider with whiskey or bottle of Moët, who the hotel’s partnered with.

Last orders

Toro serves breakfast 7am–10.30am, après-ski snacks 4pm–10.30pm and dinner 5.30pm–10.30pm. Nest Bar & Grill serves lunch from 11am to 5pm. Cafè V is open from 6.30am to noon.

Room service

Comfort food and sophisticated Southern-influenced meals are can be brought to your room 24 hours a day.

Location

Address
Viceroy Snowmass
130 Wood Road
Snowmass Village
81615
United States

Viceroy Snowmass sits 4,406ft above sea level close to Aspen’s lesser-known sibling Snowmass Village, surrounded by four sky-scraping mountains. Aspen, the Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk Mountain are all within a 20-minute drive.

Planes

Two domestic airports serve the hotel: Aspen Pitkin (www.aspenairport.com) is 15 minutes away by car; Eagle County is a 90-minute drive. Denver is the nearest international hub, a four-hour drive from the hotel. Transatlantic flights connect in Reykjavik, New York or Chicago; flights across the Pacific arrive via Los Angeles or San Francisco. Shared transfers from Aspen Pitkin Airport are included in the rate.

Trains

Glenwood Springs Amtrak Station is the closest, an hour’s drive away. You can ride the California Zephyr line from Chicago, Denver or San Francisco. From Denver it’s a six-hour ride, but you’re rewarded with views of the Rocky Mountains, the Moffat Tunnel mountain shortcut, Gore and Byers Canyons and Winter Park.

Automobiles

From Aspen Pitkin, reach the hotel via Highway 82 and Route 10. From Denver International Airport follow the I-70 then 82 highways, then County Road 10. There’s rough, rocky and snow-covered terrain – a four-wheel drive is advisable – and sparsely populated roads and memorable mountain jaunts will reward those with a car. Check with the hotel for seasonal road closures – valet parking is offered at the hotel, but in the summer a free car park is open close by.

Worth getting out of bed for

Colorado isn't a holiday spot for homebodies – of course, a serene soak in Viceroy Snowmass' cliffside hot tub is a perfectly acceptable way of passing the time (especially if you've been working your way through their vodka menu), but you won’t be able to resist taking to the rugged slopes, come snow or sunshine, to get intimate with terrain worthy of an Ansel Adams’ portrait and a good dose of adrenaline. This ski in/ski out resort gives you easy access to 91 powder-snow trails and more than 3,000 acres of snow-coated peaks for Nordic, cross-country and Alpine skiing. Glades, steeps, parks and snowboarding half-pipes are serviced by 21 chair lifts, spread over four majestic mountains – Snowmass, Buttermilk, Aspen and Aspen Highlands. There’s also a small ski boutique in the hotel if you forget any essentials, and the ski and snowboard school collective, Ski & Snowboard Schools of Aspen (+1 970 923 8000) will help you fine tune your freestyle and streamline your slalom. If skiing down the slopes isn't enough of a thrill, Krabloonik dog-sledding trips (+1 970 923 3953) can have you dashing through the snow in a husky-driven sled in no time. If you really take to it, a three-day dog-sledding course will teach you all you need to know about animal husbandry, wilderness survival and sled-driving. Those are just the winter activities, in the summer the mountains shake off their white-powder veils to reveal glorious evergreens – allowing guests to hop on the Elk Camp Gondola to reach hiking and mountain-biking trails at the mid-point and summit of Snowmass. Kayaking and more unique sports such as disc golf (there are two vertiginous 18-hole courses near the hotel) and hot-air ballooning (+1 888 927 9606) are also available. Full-throttle fun may be this destination's modus operandi but there's also a thriving art scene bolstered by nearby refined-rustic Aspen. The Jazz Aspen Snowmass Festival (+1 970 920 4996) takes place each June, the Anderson Ranch arts centre (+1 970 923 3181) holds painting and sculpture workshops and the Ann Korologos Gallery (+1 970 927 9668) holds exhibitions of contemporary Western art – the perfect place to pick up a scenic souvenir.

Local restaurants

Venga Venga Cantina & Tequila Bar (+1 970 923 7777), just a 10-minute walk from the hotel, is a rustic-chic cantina with alfresco tables, fire pits and 75 tequilas and mezcals to keep you warm. Bottomless Bloody Mary brunches and aged-tequila tastings make this a must-visit. Also close to the hotel in Snowmass is Il Poggio (+1 970 923 4292), a popular and buzzy Italian, serving imaginative dishes such as gnocchi with veal tenderloin and arugula salad with gorgonzola, strawberries and pecans. A high-end Snowmass eatery is Artisan Restaurant & Bar (+1 866 939 2471), with chic cabin-style interiors and cosy fireplaces, serving a menu of foie gras, steak, ahi tuna and sky-high sandwiches. Aspen is a 20-minute drive away, but houses most of the area's five-star restaurants, so it's worth a taxi ride there and back. Cache Cache (+1 970 925 3835) serves haute French fare with escargots, Alaskan King crab and a blue-chip global wine menu. Casa Tua (+1 970 920 7277) is a chalet-style French-influenced restaurant and members' club with elegant interiors. Before heading back to Snowmass, stop into Belly Up Aspen (+1 970 544 9800), for a diverse range of live acts – from EDM DJs to punk-folk bands – and a nightcap.

Local cafés

The J Bar at Hotel Jerome (+1 970 429 7674), an old-school saloon, has an art deco air, an excellent selection of cocktails and debonair diner fare.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this luxury ski resort in Colorado and unpacked their ski boots and Stetsons, a full account of their luxury ski break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick postcard from Viceroy Snowmass…

Viceroy Snowmass is housed in a grand chalet-style building, decorated in a Midwestern palette of sage green, oak and caramel to ‘blend in’ to the surroundings, so to speak. There's no such modest demurring inside this cosmopolitan rural retreat: barflies are lured in by the glow of Toro's bar and post-piste downtime can be spent unthawing by the fire pit in the lounge – decked out with dashes of geometric Najavo prints and tree-trunk tables. Fuel a foray to the slopes with fresh alfresco fare at the white-as-the-driven-snow Nest Bar & Grill (or double your Dutch courage with cocktail menu), and sophisticated Southern comforts at Toro Kitchen & Lounge. The hotel is impressively eco-friendly too, to the point where its pool creates its own chlorine – the kind of environmental coddling the Christmassy alpine scenery deserves.

Most activities involve whizzing through the mountain climes, whether on a pair of skis, mountain bike or dog sled. However, it’s a welcome luxury to have such an exclusive retreat to relax in après piste, one that apes Aspen’s highbrow hipness without its hoity-toity demeanour; like a mountain man donning a monocle, Viceroy Snowmass wears both refinement and rusticity well.
