Hotel closed

For 2025, Under Canvas Lake Powell – Grand Staircase will open from 13 March to 27 October.

At the hotel

Walking paths and trails, nightly campfires, refillable aluminum water bottles, water refill stations, free hot drinks, board games, Lululemon yoga mats and blocks to borrow, guest experience coordinators and a small boutique. In rooms: USB outlets, battery-powered fans, lanterns, wood-burning stoves and organic Essential Oils bath products.

Our favourite rooms

If you’re planning a romantic retreat, the Deluxe and Stargazer tents are ideal for two. Families can reserve a tent with an adjoining kids’ tent, so the whole gang can stick together.

Packing tips

Bring your coziest clothes – Under Canvas Lake Powell – Grand Staircase is a DarkSky-certified camp, so evenings (naturally) are spent admiring the night sky. Brush up on local legends or scary stories to trade around the fire pit.

Also

There’s no WiFi here, and you won’t find any TVs around, meaning evenings tend to be filled with stargazing and fireside music and s’mores.

Pet‐friendly

Four-legged friends are welcome to stay in all tents, for $25 each a night, but must be kept with you (and on a lead) at all times. See more pet-friendly hotels in Lake Powell.

Children

Welcome; there’s no kids’ club or babysitting, but some tents come with an adjoining kids’ tent, and family-friendly activities included with your stay make Under Canvas an all-ages favorite.

Sustainability efforts

As part of the company’s Mindful Approach to development and operations, Under Canvas Lake Powell – Grand Staircase has been designed to minimize disturbance, maximize open spaces, and flow with the natural topography of the land. Pull-chain showers and low-flow toilets reduce water usage; cleaning and bath products are selected to reduce damage to the environment; and electric car chargers are available for guest use. There’s no WiFi and electricity has been replaced with rechargeable battery packs, which power fans and provide USB ports; reusable water bottles are provided to cut single-use plastic, and the cutlery is biodegradable and compostable. The brand’s commitment to low light pollution and protecting the night sky are setting the standard in the industry, and Under Canvas Lake Powell is one of five DarkSky-certified camps in the group’s collection (and was the first, in fact). In addition, Under Canvas works closely with global non-profit, the Nature Conservancy, to educate and help mitigate the threats of climate change.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this canyon-surveying camp in Utah and unpacked their hiking kit and local ales, a full account of their off-grid break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Under Canvas Lake Powell – Grand Staircase…

You can thank your lucky stars at Under Canvas Lake Powell – Grand Staircase; the constellations that contrast the night sky are made all the more discernible thanks to its DarkSky certification. And though stargazing around the fire pit (s’mores in hand, of course) is a dreamy affair, daytime brings its own otherworldly delights: rippling rocks, rainbow-shaded ravines, sky-framing sandstone formations and lilac-hued mesas. The ways of traversing this Utah terrain are just as varied as the landscape itself – there’s kayaking, paddle boarding, boat trips and jet skiing on Lake Powell (swim or sunbathe at nearby Lone Rock Beach). The state’s desert landscape is ideal for hiking or rock climbing; driving a UTV or trekking on horseback to slot canyons and across sweeping rockscapes. Whichever your preferred activity and nature-blessed backdrop, we’re certain you’ll be left starry-eyed.
