Setting

The sunset coast

Steps from a strip of white sand on Phuket’s west coast, Twinpalms Montazure makes the most of its Andaman views with an enticing array of sea-view suites and suave beach clubs. The hotel crests tree-studded Kamala Beach at the front and is met by hills swathed in greenery at the back, ensuring it feels in tune with nature despite its modernist looks. Speaking of modernism, the suites champion both space and light, featuring oversized windows and large wood-panelled living areas overlooking the sea. On the grounds, the distractions include two large pools, seafront restaurant Shimmer and a laid-back beach club with an ambient soundtrack and plump daybeds. Free shuttles will ferry you to two more beaches and three more clubs, one of them a louche hangout for night owls, another designed specifically for children.

Our favourite rooms

All of the suites are styled in the same way, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows, pale-wood panelling, earthy furnishings and sleek marble bathrooms. If it’s just the two of you, go for one of the suites with a private pool, which are sprawled over 180sq m and come with a wine cellar and bar, ensuring a selection of sundowners. The two-bedroom Azure Sea View Suites have ample space for families, with a large living and dining area, kitchen and private terrace overlooking the Andaman Sea.

Poolside

There are two large pools, one designed for lounging, the other for more serious swimmers. The first, triangle-shaped pool is on the beachfront, surrounded by shady cabanas and manicured palms. Half of the pool is given over to a shallow section, scattered with in-water sunloungers that mean you can dip your feet in but keep your book dry. The second, 30m pool is tucked between two buildings, and is a better option if you’re hoping to do a few laps.

There’s no spa, but there is a sleek fitness studio equipped with everything you need for a full workout.

Dress Code

Go casual during the day, but your fellow guests tend to dress up a little for dinner.

Hotel restaurant

Cresting the white sands of Kamala beach, Shimmer restaurant is styled like a Mediterranean beach club, with white furniture, cerulean blue fabrics and wooden decking. Tables on the terrace are closest to the Andaman Sea, but the whole restaurant is usually opened up to the elements, ensuring sea views from every table. The menu is fresh and zesty, with plenty of seafood like soft-shell crab, king-size prawns and grilled white snapper. For something heartier, try the Australian ribeye steak or Phuket curry, made with duck and fragrant pineapple.

Worth getting out of bed for

Yearning for sunrise swims, seaside lunches or sundowners on the sand? If the answer to any or all of these is yes, you’re in very good hands. At Twinpalms Montazure, you’ll have access to no fewer than three stretches of sand, each with a beach club (or in some cases, two). Up the coast, Bang Tao beach snakes over 8km, making it perfect for sunset strolls. Cresting the shore is Catch Club, playing host to cocktail-tinged days and champagne-soaked nights, often with star DJs behind the decks. If you’re looking for something more family-friendly, head next door Catch Junior, where children can frolic on the giant inflatable pillow, take DJing lessons and try their hand at the climbing ropes. Free shuttles can ferry you to all three, or to sister hotel Twinpalms Phuket, where more restaurants, bars and lounge areas await.

Once you’ve exhausted all three of the beaches near the hotel, consider a day’s island hopping. Popular trips include the idyllic Phi Phi islands, Coral Island (sought for its snorkelling), and James Bond Island, a 20m karst tower that got its nickname after it made an appearance in The Man with the Golden Gun. Back on Phuket, be sure to explore the old town, which is considerably more impressive than anything found on many Thai islands. One of the main reasons for this was Phuket’s 20th-century tin boom, which brought a deluge of wealth to the island – or at least its tin barons. These industry captains built many of the colourful Sino-colonial mansions that occupy the best plots, and you’ll find charming, decorative-tiled cafés along the busier streets, where you can stop for coffee and a Phuket round cake. In late afternoon, go for a stroll along Promthep Cape, arguably the best place to watch one of Phuket's famous sunsets.

Local restaurants

There are seven restaurants split between the two Twinpalms hotels, so there’s not much reason to venture into town for a meal. At Twinpalms Phuket, try Oriental Spoon, which has a way with grilled meat and Thai classics, or the Palm, serving sushi, lavish seafood platters and dim sum-style light bites. Perched just above the shoreline on Bang Tao beach, Catch Beach Club is the place for oysters, caviar, lobster and imported crab, best paired with champagne or rosé. If you do want to eat in Phuket town, book a table at Blue Elephant, a Thai fine-dining restaurant in what was once the governor’s mansion.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this beachfront hotel in Phuket and unpacked an array of designer beachwear, a full account of their Thai island break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Twinpalms Montazure in Phuket…

Lapping lush green islands deemed beautiful enough to make it to the silver screen, the Andaman Sea is famous for its peace-inducing power and impressive colours, ranging from fluorescent shades of turquoise to cerulean blues. The truth is, however, that it looks even better when it’s washed in the pink and marmalade tones of a Phuket sunset, something that’s best seen from the island’s well-heeled west coast. Cresting Kamala Beach (and close to two more stretches of idyllic sand), Twinpalms Montazure couldn't be better placed to make the most of Phuket’s celebrated golden hour. Your suite, the pool, the restaurant – all are angled towards the Andaman, making it almost impossible to miss a picture-perfect moment no matter what you’re doing. And, with access to four different beach clubs spread between three beaches, you decide how and where you want to toast the end of the day – whether it’s with international DJs, over oysters and champagne or at dinner with the whole family.
