Our favourite rooms

Clean-lined, whitewashed and seductive, rooms have a hint of urban edge, thanks to dark-stone floors and brushed concrete walls. Locally sourced textiles and objets d’art – burnished plant pots, hand-carved hangings – add a certain bohemian spirit. Deluxe Living rooms have peaceful courtyard views and an attractive outdoor living space with a day-bed – just the ticket after a day of exploring. If you’re in the mood for a long soak (those temple climbs can take their toll), opt for the Executive Suite and its inviting bath tub.

Poolside

The hotel’s rooftop pool is a spectacular emerald affair, just right for muscle-toning laps or sunset views over the river and Siem Reap’s Old Town beyond. There’s a row of slimline sunloungers for gentle idling, and a poolside bar should you have a sudden craving for something cold and thirst-quenching.

Spa

Stylish Suri Spa has four airy treatment rooms dressed with locally made ceramics and architectural plants. Potions and unguents – a coffee scrub with tamarind and honey, say, or hot compresses made from Khmer herbs – are rustled up on site by the therapists, who harness the powers of essential oils extracted from locally grown, organic plants. Opt for the Suri Spa Experience, a heavenly three-hour session that will leave you softened, plumped and soothed.

Packing tips

Leave space for a stack of krama in your suitcase: the traditional Khmer scarves can double up as slings, hammocks or winter-brightening gifts to take home.

Welcome. Under-5s stay free. Extra beds (US$50 a night, US$25 a night for under-11s) can be added to Deluxe Living King rooms and Junior and Executive Suites. The restaurant has high chairs and will happily heat up milk or adapt dishes for fussy eaters.

Sustainability efforts

Treeline Urban Resort’s eco-friendly approach is rooted in respect for the local community and environment. The hotel supports tree-planting, plastic-clearing and educational initiatives, as well as raising funds for local NGOs. Rooms and public facilities are plastic-free: the hotel uses green alternatives such as palm leaf, water hyacinth or cardboard instead, and provides reusable aluminium water bottles for its guests. Food waste, glass and cooking fuel are recycled, and produce is sourced from local organic farm Happy & Co.

Sit in the foliage-shaded courtyard for a serene breakfast. In Hok, the curvaceous sofa bench makes a good people-watching perch.

Hok is a laid-back spot; jeans and a t-shirt won’t feel out of place here.

Hotel restaurant

Early morning temple runs call for an energy boost at Seed, the hotel’s courtyard-facing breakfast spot. À la carte options take inspiration from around the world, from num pang paté (the Franco-Cambodian take on banh mi) to garlicky noodle soup and a scrumptious pork belly hash. Chef Khoy Chantrea is at the helm at Hok Noodle Bar + Grill, a buzzing local hangout with floor-to-ceiling windows, a bold illustrated mural and on-trend good looks. The menu riffs on pan-Asian flavours: miso-glazed aubergine, shrimp and crab wontons, or a moreish red-braised-duck.

Hotel bar

The poolside Canopy Bar is more an urban haven than a raucous party spot. Its tropical cocktail list is petite but perfectly formed: try a thirst-quenching lychee sparkler, a sophisticated ginger martini or – if you’re planning on setting up camp and sampling the crowd-pleasing menu of pizza, fish sandwiches and other bar bites – an easy-to-quaff pitcher of watermelon margarita.

Last orders

Seed serves breakfast from 6.30am to 10.30am. Hok is open from 11am to 11pm. The Canopy Bar pours drinks until 10pm.

Room service

Tempting morsels such as smoked fish pâté or wok-fried noodles and green mango salad can be brought to your room from 10am to 10pm.

Riverside Treeline Urban Resort is a hop and a skip from the Old Market in the centre of Siem Reap, within easy reach of the Angkor temples.

Planes

A half-hour drive away, Siem Reap airport serves international flights from most Asian hubs and domestic flights to Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville. One-way airport transfers for up to four people cost US$24.

Automobiles

There’s free parking at the hotel, but visitors are discouraged from driving on Cambodia’s often chaotic roads. Hire a chauffeur-driven car, tuk tuk or moto (motorcycle) driver to explore Siem Reap's temple-dotted countryside.

Worth getting out of bed for

Resisting the lures of the nearby temples may be an impossible task, but, let’s face it – the mystical structures have been there for centuries, and will still be begging to be explored should you be in the mood for a day or two spent lounging by the hotel’s photogenic rooftop pool. Make time for organic treatments and expert ministrations in the pampering Suri Spa; the manager trained at Amansara, so you know you’re in good hands. 

Once you’ve roused yourself from a blissed-out stupor, hit the road and head to the Unesco-protected Angkor temple complex, a jaw-dropping archaeological site stretching out over 400sq km. The three spires of Angkor Wat and the tree-shrouded Ta Prohm temple may be the main draw, but it pays to explore further afield, whether you have your sights on the picturesque ruins of Beng Mealea or the delicate carvings of Banteay Srei. 

Hip, bustling and laid-back, Siem Reap itself is a joy to explore on foot. Just across the river, Louise Loubatieres Gallery’s eponymous designer puts a contemporary spin on traditional local crafts; stock up on silk necklaces, geometric vases and rainbow-hued lacquered bowls. Get acquainted with Cambodian folklore at Phare Circus, a social enterprise supporting a public school and specialised arts training. Taste Siem Reap offers whirlwind tours of Siem Reap’s finest gourmet hotspots aboard a tuk tuk: opt for a fine-dining experience taking in three restaurants, or a night owl’s flit from galleries to cocktail bars. 

Local restaurants

Make a pit stop at Mie Café, in a traditional wooden house on the road to the temples, for inventive takes on Khmer fare: squid ink ravioli in a curry emulsion, say, or stir-fried Tonle Sap eel. Set back from the river, the little sibling of long-time Phnom Penh fave The Sugar Palm serves perfectly executed comfort food to share. Grab an alfresco table in Malis’s refined courtyard, where chef Luu Meng has been reworking forgotten Cambodian recipes with fresh seasonal produce and a delicate touch.

Local cafés

A stalwart of Siem Reap’s growing café scene, hip The Hive puts an Australian spin on all-day munches. Expect scrumptious cakes, healthy lunch bowls and superb coffee. The elegant Glasshouse Deli serves a mean scoop of gelato: try the palm sugar or coconut flavours.

Local bars

Sultry Miss Wong kickstarted Siem Reap’s cocktail craze, and is still much loved for its speakeasy vibe, dashing good looks and tropical tipples. Tiny Wild (there are only a dozen tables) takes an ethical stance: produce is local, staff gets paid fairly, and proceeds from the little shop go towards supporting a local NGO. Its flavour-packed cocktails and luxuriant garden aren’t bad, either.

Right in the heart of Siem Reap with views of the river, Treeline Urban Resort sets itself apart with a striking rooftop pool and heartfelt dedication to being sustainable. Brought together around a central courtyard, its four wings are discreetly elegant but peppered with handicrafts and striking pieces from the hotel’s art collection. Contemporary Khmer design – ethical, easy on the eye and imbued with local flavour – has come of age in its attractive rooms, alfresco breakfast spot and intriguing art gallery. That’s not to say that Treeline Urban Resort has lost track of the fun and frivolous: there’s a bar for poolside sips, a crowd-pleasing noodle bar for grazing, and a soothing spa to make short work of any residual tensions.
