Dreamt up by a disciple of Gaudí in 1910, Torre del Remei is a Modernist mansion topped by cava-pink turrets in a setting that’s equal parts surreal and storybook. Horses graze the surrounding greenery, and the technicolour peaks of the Catalan Pyrenees can be spied from wrought-iron balconies and the tree-lined pool. Our favourite rooms

The Art Nouveau-inspired accommodation is split between the main house and an adjoining stone dwelling (formerly the estate’s stables), yet all share verdant vistas and carefully restored period details such as beamed ceilings and baronial fireplaces. To max out on palatial proportions, go for the Grand Suite; its three balconies look out over the grounds towards rugged Pyrenees peaks that you can ogle from the freestanding tub placed before one of the French doors.

Poolside

In a sun-dappled corner of the gardens, the outdoor pool blends into the surrounding fir trees and redwoods, with elegant green striped chairs and loungers dotted around the lawn.

Spa

An assortment of massages can be booked in sessions of 25, 50, and 75 minutes, ideal for both targeted treatments and full-body restoration. Opt for the foot reflexology if you’ve been on a strenuous hike or horse-ride, and you’ll be hitting the trails again in no time. There’s also a greenhouse-style gym hidden within the grounds that’s kitted out with the latest Technogym machines for nature-immersed workouts.

Packing tips

Exploring the nearby Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park requires ample athleisure gear and comfortable footwear, especially if you’re planning to join one of the hotel’s yoga or equestrian retreats.

Dress Code

There’s no need to go full faixa, but a small nod to Catalan countryside attire won’t go amiss (tall boots and embroidered shirts, for example).

Hotel restaurant

Expect plates as verdant as Cerdanya’s landscape at TR 1910, a grand dining room which spills out onto a relaxed, garden-facing terrace. Ingredients are drawn from the surrounding forests, farmland, and Costa Brava coastline, for traditional dishes passed down the Boix family for several generations. The menu changes with the seasons, flitting between cold Salmorejo soup with lobster in the summer and slow-cooked beef cheek and berries in the autumn. The desserts are all homemade, and the creamy, caramel flan is a comforting classic (and closely guarded in-house recipe).

Hotel bar

As its name suggests, Botanic Bar is an ode to Torre del Remei’s natural surroundings. Herbs, foliage and wildflowers are foraged from the hotel’s orchards and nearby meadows to flavour and adorn artisanal cocktails. Whatever the season, the creative margarita infusions, such as watermelon and lime, always go down nicely.

On the outskirts of the rural village of Bolvir in the Catalan Pyrenees, Torre del Remei is wrapped up within the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park near the borders of Andorra and France.

Planes

The hotel is two hours’ drive from both Girona-Costa Brava and Barcelona airports.

Automobiles

It’s worth having a set of wheels for coastal road trips — hopping from one Costa Brava beach to the next — as well as working your way up from the low-lying countryside of Cerdanya to the Pyrenees’ mountain trails and mediaeval villages. Plus, there’s free parking at the hotel.

Worth getting out of bed for

The great swathes of forest, meadows, and valleys surrounding Torre del Remei are a year-round adventure playground for mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking, and skiing (once the Pyrenees are blanketed in snow). The hotel’s network of local guides leads expeditions into the mountainous wilds of the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park, but there are cultural treasures afoot too; admire Romanesque churches clinging to hilltop villages, climb La Mola’s rocky summit to reach the Benedictine monastery of Sant Llorenç, and synch your visit with one of Bagà’s mediaeval markets. Spend time in the saddle at Cerdanya Eqüestre, a nearby stableyard specialising in equestrian workshops designed to bond horses and riders within several hours of lessons and hacks. The hotel also hosts seasonal yoga retreats in its gardens, and provides golfing equipment if you’d like to putt your way around the scenic course in Puigcerdà.

Local restaurants

A 30-minute drive south of the hotel will bring you to the stone-clad village of Bagà, where family-run inn Ca L’Amagat champions fresh produce from the bountiful Berguedà region. In the opposite direction, hop over the border into France for an alpine fix at La Chaumière, a traditional thatched cottage with its own charcuterie cellar and mountain-backed terrace. The cured meat and cheese boards are deliciously rustic, and the tapas dishes cleverly combine Catalan and French flavours.

Local bars

It’s worth venturing slightly further afield (or a-vineyard, in this case) to sample fine Catalan vintages at Cal Mandrat, a family-run winery offering organic tastings amid the vines.

Set in the north of Catalonia, the valley-cradled canvas within which Torre del Remei resides is so awe- and art-inspiring that Picasso, Gaudí and Dalí all attribute works to its natural beauty. As fantastical as its heart-of-the-mountains setting is, the hotel’s striking pink façade and Rapunzel-worthy towers lend an extra layer of magic. Inside, imaginative owners Jose Maria Boix and his wife Loles Vidal have worked wonders, importing marble columns from Greece, handcrafted furniture from Italy, and carpets from Tibet.
