Heartstrings-pulling pub

Setting

Edge of Emsworth

The Ropemaker is a palate-tempting pub with rooms, near cultural Chichester and West Sussex beaches, that will pull you into its coastal embrace. Brightly hued bedrooms are kitted out with Roberts radios and Bramley sleep spray, but a French-nodding dinner at the Raymond Blanc-approved restaurant — or a couple of house cocktails at the bar or on the terrace — has a similar soporific effect. The whole clan (pooches included) will know the ropes in no time.

The Fancy Accessible Room and Really Comfy Accessible Room are each set on the ground floor and have adapted bathrooms with roll-in, rainfall showers, lowered sinks and handrails. The dining area is accessible for wheelchairs.

At the hotel

Free WiFi throughout. In rooms: smart TV with Chromecast, Roberts radio, minifridge, tea- and coffee-making kit, free bottled water and Bramley bath products.

Our favourite rooms

The Ropemaker’s close-to-the-seaside setting inspires its colourful, coastal interiors. Lap up sea-referencing shades and driftwood-like furnishings in a Comfy Room; things heat up in a warmer-toned Really Fancy Room, which has burnt-orange accents, a freestanding bath tub and a bay-window-framed seating area.

Packing tips

Ditch your Calm app: some rooms have Bramley sleep sprays that will have you nodding off in no time, and a Roberts radio offers kip-inducing background noise.

Pet‐friendly

Up to two pooches are welcome to stay in some rooms and the hotel will supply a bed, bowl and treat. Plus, dogs can join you in the bar and a dedicated area in the restaurant. See more pet-friendly hotels in Hampshire.

Children

Welcome. Most rooms can take a baby cot; some accommodate an extra bed instead, but the Fancy Family Room is best if you’re bringing your little Smiths. The restaurant has a children’s menu.

Sustainability efforts

The Ropemaker’s provenance-proud restaurant has been awarded for its ethical food sourcing, local suppliers and seasonal menus.

Hotel restaurant

There are many joys associated with the change in seasons: nature’s new colour palette for one, which is reflected in the menu at The Ropemaker’s pub. French-leaning fare, masterminded by chef Raymond Blanc, spotlights Hampshire-sourced ingredients, and you can expect to find dishes such as an oak-smoked cheddar soufflé alongside hake Grenoblaise with brown butter. Desserts are decadent so make sure you find a way to come hungry to breakfast, where cinnamon French toast and eggs royale continue the indulgence. And as if your waistbands hadn’t been tested enough, sustainable Sunday roasts come with all the trimmings (including bottomless roast potatoes…).

Hotel bar

The pub’s wood-lined bar is a chummy spot for a post-yomp pint. You could sip a Blood Orange Paloma under one of the garden’s fringed parasols, or take your house gin and tonic to the front patio.

Last orders

Breakfast is from 7am to 9.30am during the week; from 7.30am, on weekends. From Monday to Saturday, the pub serves food from noon to 9.45pm (drinks until 11pm); on Sundays, dine until 9pm or drink until 9.45pm.

Address
The Ropemaker
93 Havant Road
Emsworth
PO10 7LF
United Kingdom

The Ropemaker sits on the verdant outskirts of Emsworth, a quaint town that’s close to Chichester on Hampshire’s inlet-lined coast.

Planes

Southampton Airport is a 30-minute drive away; staff can book taxis on request.

Trains

Rail routes from London, Portsmouth and Brighton call at Havant and Emsworth; each station is a five-minute cab ride from the pub.

Automobiles

A set of wheels comes in handy for taking in the South Downs National Park and West Sussex’s beaches, which are each around 20 minutes’ drive away. South London is less than a 90-minute drive; Portsmouth and Chichester are each 15 minutes away by road. The Ropemaker has a free car park.

Worth getting out of bed for

Appetite-rousing activities rank high on agendas ahead of feasting at The Ropemaker. Down-the-road Emsworth lays many claims to fame: oyster fishing, ropemaking (if the hotel’s name wasn’t a giveaway) and supposedly the home of PG Wodehouse. Once you’ve strolled along its waterfront or down the sweet high street, continue on to Fishbourne Roman Palace for its mosaic-tiled villa and picturesque gardens. Take in market town Chichester, which is home to the annual performing arts festival, and shrine-to-art Goodwood House on its outskirts.

If you’re more of an outdoorsy type, swap the local cultural scene for coastal cycle paths and seal-spotting boat trips. You can learn how to windsurf on blustery Hayling Island or brace for salty dips on West Wittering beach.

Local restaurants

The restaurant at harbour-set 36 On The Quay puts a contemporary spin on fine dining, with playfully presented dishes and an eight-course tasting menu. You’ll leave Fat Olives feeling stuffed thanks to its polished Modern European fare, of which handmade pasta, local game and indulgent puddings are firm favourites.

Local cafés

Wash up on Driftwood Cafe’s garden terrace for hearty yet fresh breakfasts, decadent cream tea and tempting toasties, alongside strong Union Coffee cuppas. Pair your brew with baklava at Il Foxo, a Greek-nodding bakery with traditional pastries.

Local bars

Pubs are aplenty in this neck of the woods: we like Crown & Anchor and the Ship Inn, Langstone for waterfront sundowners.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this pub with rooms in Emsworth and unpacked their windbreakers and walking boots, a full account of their coastal break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside The Ropemaker in Hampshire…

Good food and company are two resolutions found at The Ropemaker, a charming room-toting pub on Hampshire’s coastal fringes. The same jolly ethos is adopted at its Smith-approved sister stays, The Coat & Bear and The White Horse Dorking.

The Ropemaker stands out for its setting: beaches, bucolic landscape and Hampshire hotspots are within easy reach. Waterfront rambles or wandering around Chichester are our preferred way to work up an appetite, which you’ll want to come armed with to the hotel’s dining room. With chef Raymond Blanc’s seal of approval, pub classics are given a Gallic twist at fireside dinners and Sunday roasts, but the produce remains seasonal and locally sourced.

Fed and ready to retire, you won’t have to travel far: a host of stylish seafoam-green and burnt-orange bedrooms — we’re also eyeing the Really Fancy Room’s roll-top bath tub — allow for some recharging (and digesting) before the next meal...
