Setting

Pacific Pointe Dume

The Ranch Malibu has long attracted A-list Angelenos for its results-driven wellness programs. And while typically we’re fans of the kick back with a glass of pinot type of retreat, this is one health nut we’re willing to get behind. Sunrise treks, fitness classes and nourishing free-from fare mark your daily routine; but you’re also slated for plenty of quiet time. And with spotty cell service, your mind and body are set to be as clear as the Pacific waters below.

Need to know

Rooms

21 cottages.

Check–Out

10am, but flexible, subject to availability. Check-in is at noon, and staff ask you arrive as close to this time as possible, since group activities begin at 2pm.

More details

Rates include all meals, drinks, snacks, guided hikes, fitness and yoga classes and a daily 50-minute massage, plus departure group transfers to LAX.

Also

The Ranch Malibu’s staple six-night program isn’t particularly suitable for guests with limited mobility. However, there’s an ADA-approved cottage on-site — our Smith 24 Travel Team are on-call to help with bookings and any questions.

Please note

There aren’t any TVs here and cell reception is limited along this remote corner of the coast. There’s free WiFi in your rooms if you’re in desperate need of a scroll, but you’re encouraged to unplug as much as possible during your stay.

At the hotel

Five-acre gardens, treatment and meditation huts, activity house and boutique. In rooms: free WiFi, climate control, free bottled water, hairdryer and bespoke, natural bath products.

Our favourite rooms

All the cottages have a similarly serene feel, with their own Secret Garden-style entrances, an easy-on-the-eye cream palette, and rustic, farmhouse features. You’re encouraged to come alone, to make the most of the quiet, but if you’re visiting as a duo the Guest Cottage with One King Bed is where we’d be deciding to bed down.

Poolside

Cool off after your morning’s hike with a soak in the outdoor swimming pool, shaded by looming trees and bathed in the ranch’s signature serenity. There’s also a cold plunge pool for those in search of a healthy shock to the system.

Spa

In a sense, the whole ranch is your spa. Roaming animals keep you relaxed; barrels for foot baths sit alongside a clutch of epsom salts and herbs for post-hike soothing; meditation huts invite quiet moments, and there’s a fitness house for exercise-induced endorphins. But if all you’re really craving after those early morning treks is a traditional treatment, head to the ‘massage village’, where seven standalone huts rest ready for your scheduled daily deknotting. There’s an infrared sauna that’s free to use, too, and you can pay for acupuncture, cupping and IV infusions.

Packing tips

As long as you’ve an open mind (and a sturdy pair of Salomons), you’ll be all set to make the most of your stay.

Also

For those taking their health kick seriously, there’s Bod Pod testing on-site.

Children

Over-14s are welcome, but this wellness programme is likely too intense for anyone under 18.

Sustainability efforts

Sustainability is a pillar of life at The Ranch Malibu. All the restaurant’s produce is grown in its five-acre regenerative and organic garden, home to over 100 different plant species. The hotel’s resident animals (goats, dogs, cats, chickens, bees) play an important role in waste management, pest control, plant pollination and supporting mental health. Daily activities are centred around learning about your landscapes and how the hotel is helping reforestation efforts, as well as delivering excess food to local food banks and removing litter from Malibu’s farms. The Ranch has their own charity, too, which provides an education to marginalised communities. They also partner with California-based and global charities, including the Clean Water Foundation and the Santa Monica Trails Council.

Food and Drink

Top Table

There’s only one, so choice is limited. But we’d snag a seat where the warmth from the crackling wood-burning fire hits.

Dress Code

There’s likely to be some A-listers in the mix at mealtimes, so opt for something classy but comfortable to blend right in.

Hotel restaurant

Like most things at The Ranch Malibu, dining is done a little differently. There’s no formal restaurant; instead, dishes are plated at one communal table in the cozy main house, set up to encourage each of the 25 guests to share stories and get to know one another. Every dish, from breakfast to dinner, is deftly prepared with ingredients grown in the gardens. And don’t let the plant-based, gluten- and dairy-free fare have you fooled: meals are packed with flavor and surprisingly filling given the small size (bigger portions can be requested). Favorites include the sweetcorn frittatas, spinach and zucchini lasagna and veggie tacos.

Hotel bar

Alcohol isn’t on the cards at this cleansing retreat, but you’re welcome to help yourself to tea or coffee from a hot drinks station in the main house.

Last orders

Meal times may change depending on the day, but typically breakfast is between 6.30am and 7.30am; lunch is between noon and 12.30pm, and dinner is served at 7pm.

You’ll find The Ranch Malibu resting on a secluded expanse in Southern California’s Point Dume area.

Planes

The closest international airport is LAX, around an hour’s drive from the ranch, depending on traffic. Private pick-ups from the airport can be arranged for an additional charge, and drop-offs on your departure day are included in rates (the shuttle leaves at 10am, so be sure to book a flight no earlier than 1pm).

Automobiles

You’re encouraged to stay on-site for the duration of your stay, to help fully immerse yourself in the Ranch’s off-grid ethos, so a car won’t be necessary. If you’re driving to the retreat, there’s private parking.

Worth getting out of bed for

Days at The Ranch Malibu follow a regimented structure, starting with an early-morning stretching class and either a two- or four-hour hike, with the rest of your 24-guest group, through the Santa Monica Mountains.

Back at base, it’s all about recovery: yoga and meditation classes, deep tissue massages, restorative therapies and treatments, sound baths, pool dips, cold plunges and sauna sessions are your idling pastimes. You’ll have one additional fitness class in the afternoon, too, before a designated hour to nap before dinner. Garden tours and cooking classes teach you about the ranch’s regenerative farming and local sustainability initiatives, and there are nutrition and wellness talks during the evenings if you’re looking to learn more.

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside The Ranch Malibu…

Standing the test of time — in reassuring contrast to the fad health crazes that its home state is known for — Californian wellness retreat, The Ranch Malibu has perfected its prescription for restorative R’n’R.

It was 2010 when health-turned-hospitality heroes Alex and Sue Glasscock first discovered this working ranch, just inland of Malibu’s Pointe Dume. Renovations were meticulous, scattering farmhouse-style cottages, renovated barns, huts and a five-acre regenerative farm across its coastal expanse. Now, wellness mavens flock — in crews no larger than 25 — for a rigorous week-long program of early wake-up calls, hilly group hikes, fitness classes and surprisingly flavorful plant-based meals. And if that’s all sounding a bit ‘up and at em!’, you’ll be pleased to hear all this exertion comes with plenty of relaxing, too. Afternoon schedules include an allotted hour-long massage, yoga classes, prescribed nap times, pool swims and sauna sessions. Before the end of the week, you’ll be raising your kombucha to the new you.
