Setting

Mid-century mod tower

Koreatown’s Line LA may be mid-century modern from the outside, but inside, this industrial-chic boutique hotel is a blend of exposed concrete and design-led, citrus-hued furnishings. Rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows with sweeping city views, and a rooftop pool with a view is ready for California’s sunny days. The flavours of the neighbourhood are carefully combined in the hotel’s two eateries, and there’s also a lobby-based bar and a club with karaoke suites to really hit home that California, as the song claims, knows how to party.

Our favourite rooms

We love that most rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows, and particularly favour those with views of the Hollywood Hills. For extra lounging space, spring for a spacious suite, which will have an extra-large bed in its bedroom.

The heated outdoor rooftop pool is open from 10am to 7pm; the surrounding pool deck is lined with citrus trees, deck chairs, sunloungers and sweet-smelling flowering plants. Order from the Openaire menu directly to your poolside perch any day of the week, and saunter over to the satellite pool bar on the weekends.

Top Table

It’s hard to go wrong in the glass-walled Openaire; practically every seat has a view of the Los Angeles skyline.

Dress Code

Keep it sleek and stylish, channelling just a bit of K-Pop meets Hollywood.

Hotel restaurant

Hit sun-blessed Openaire for the best views and first-class feasts by Los Angeles' own Josiah Citrin: the greenery-packed hotspot puts the best of the Sunshine State on your poolside plate, from both land and sea. Stop by for breakfast, weekend brunch, lunch, dinner or happy hour – bring your friends to make the most of the eminently shareable dishes. But first, coffee… the Alfred café dishes out freshly baked pastries and juices, waters and coffees. Sip your morning cup of joe in the lobby, or order your goodies for takeaway.

Hotel bar

Sidle up to the circular lobby bar to order your drinks, then retreat to one of the banquettes. The very clever Happy Hour Agency keeps the drinks flowing, with old fashioneds on tap, draft beers and wines. And over at Eighties-themed Break Room 86, K-Town natives Mark and Jonnie Houston have created a menu to suit even the sweetest tooth (booze-drenched push pops, anyone?) and a soundtrack that'll take you back. Book a karaoke suite and party like it’s 1986.

Last orders

Alfred café is open from 6am to 6pm.

Room service

Order anything from the restaurant menus directly for bedside delivery: breakfast from 6am to 11am, and then all-day dishes till 10pm.

Worth getting out of bed for

The art deco, emerald-green Pellissier Building towers above the adjoining Wiltern theatre, a short walk from the hotel; check out what’s on the calendar at the latter, which has hosted Bob Dylan and Big Lebowski festivals. Follow the locals to immense Wi Spa (2700 Wilshire Boulevard), a multi-level traditional Korean spa with salt, clay, jade and ice saunas. Choose from a range of massages, acupressure treatments and facials, and make your way to the spa’s sprawling lounge for multigrain misugaru shakes and udon soup with pickled vegetables. Catch a game at the Dodger Stadium – with a beer or hot dog in hand, naturally – or peruse the exhibits at local museums; the Japanese American National Museum, the Geffen Contemporary, and the Broad are all on your side of town.

Local restaurants

With a bright orange-painted concrete floor, live salsa band and a serious list of agave liquor, Oaxacan restaurant Guelaguetza serves up southern Mexican cooking with gusto. We’re talking mole-covered dishes of chicken, pork and even grilled cactus; they do a mean egg-based brunch too. For French-inspired fare with a view, rooftop bistro Perch has you (un)covered; start with a sharing plate of saffron-infused mussels or charcuterie before mains of boeuf bordelaise or scallops on a bed of parsnip purée. Book well in advance for blowout dinners at Bestia, where sharing plates reign supreme and bar-room-brawl weaponry hangs from the halls. Don’t skimp out on spicy ’nduja pizza, stuffed ravioli or clams, and wash it all down with the brandy digestif served in an empty bone (yes, really). Over in Silver Lake, health-conscious Botanica has a menu starring local produce, rainbow-coloured grains, Californian olive oil, wild seafood and sustainably-raised meat. The menu changes monthly; past offerings have included ghee-toasted banana buckwheat bread, tortilla Espanola, and king salmon with seared radicchio and citrus.

Local bars

Freehand Los Angeles’s rooftop bar Broken Shaker has dizzyingly spectacular panoramic views of Los Angeles; expect beach-inspired style, carefully-crafted cocktails and light bites.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this boutique hotel in Los Angeles and unpacked their spicy gochujang and Runyon Canyon dust-covered shoes, a full account of their luxury city break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Line LA in California…

This bordering-on-Brutalist hotel, smack bang in the heart of LA’s Koreatown, knows how to perfectly mix the seemingly dissimilar. Mid-century architecture? Let’s add a dash of all-mod, locally designed furniture. Mexican-inspired meals? Slap some kimchi on that. Classic cocktail? Put it on tap. Combine all of that with rooms that survey the city’s skyline and Hollywood Hills, a rooftop pool and an Atari-era nostalgia-laced club complete with karaoke rooms, and you have Line LA. The sooner you unpack, the sooner you can shimmy to Tupac’s ‘California Love’, belt out Petty’s ‘Free Falling’, or croon along to ‘Hotel California’; don’t worry though, you can check out, you just may never want to leave.
