Worth getting out of bed for

The art deco, emerald-green Pellissier Building towers above the adjoining Wiltern theatre, a short walk from the hotel; check out what’s on the calendar at the latter, which has hosted Bob Dylan and Big Lebowski festivals. Follow the locals to immense Wi Spa (2700 Wilshire Boulevard), a multi-level traditional Korean spa with salt, clay, jade and ice saunas. Choose from a range of massages, acupressure treatments and facials, and make your way to the spa’s sprawling lounge for multigrain misugaru shakes and udon soup with pickled vegetables. Catch a game at the Dodger Stadium – with a beer or hot dog in hand, naturally – or peruse the exhibits at local museums; the Japanese American National Museum, the Geffen Contemporary, and the Broad are all on your side of town. 

Local restaurants

With a bright orange-painted concrete floor, live salsa band and a serious list of agave liquor, Oaxacan restaurant Guelaguetza serves up southern Mexican cooking with gusto. We’re talking mole-covered dishes of chicken, pork and even grilled cactus; they do a mean egg-based brunch too. For French-inspired fare with a view, rooftop bistro Perch has you (un)covered; start with a sharing plate of saffron-infused mussels or charcuterie before mains of boeuf bordelaise or scallops on a bed of parsnip purée. Book well in advance for blowout dinners at Bestia, where sharing plates reign supreme and bar-room-brawl weaponry hangs from the halls. Don’t skimp out on spicy ’nduja pizza, stuffed ravioli or clams, and wash it all down with the brandy digestif served in an empty bone (yes, really). Over in Silver Lake, health-conscious Botanica has a menu starring local produce, rainbow-coloured grains, Californian olive oil, wild seafood and sustainably-raised meat. The menu changes monthly; past offerings have included ghee-toasted banana buckwheat bread, tortilla Espanola, and king salmon with seared radicchio and citrus.
