Our favourite rooms

Compact but stylish, The Lindley’s rooms make the most of the building’s lofty ceilings, with tall windows that let in plenty of light. They’re photogenic spaces, decorated with geometric tiles, contemporary artwork and eye-catching colours. Kitted out with a small living area and sofa, Lindley’s 22 rooms are more spacious. You’ll find some hand-picked records in your pad: take them to the Parlour to give them a spin.

Hotel restaurant

Much like its older sibling Seven Swans, Leuchtendroter is concerned with tastebud-tickling vegetarian cuisine. Chef Niklas Horn is at the helm in the kitchen, making the most of seasonal produce from the hotel’s permaculture plot, just 30 kilometres away. Everything’s organic, rustic and quite delicious, from stuffed courgette flowers to a moreish carbonara rich with smoked beetroot and confit egg yolk. For an afternoon pick-me-up, Leuchtendroter’s bakery serves generous slices of home-baked cake and restorative cups of coffee. If you’re left inspired by all this wholesomeness, head upstairs to one of the two community kitchens to rustle up simple fare, such as a fluffy omelette or pasta with herbs from the hotel’s indoor plot.

Hotel bar

Venture out of your room to mingle in The Lindley’s sociable spaces: whether you’re taking in the views from the rooftop terrace or hiding out in the Parlour with some vinyls and spirits, there’s a drinking den here for every mood. Fifth-floor Bar Marmion is a seductive spot for a tipple. Take a seat at the striking aquamarine bar for expertly mixed cocktails: a citrussy gin and marmalade number, say, or or a spiced, tequila-infused ‘café imperial’ to kickstart the night’s festivities.

Last orders

Dinner is served at Leuchtendroter from 6.30pm to 11pm, Monday to Saturday. In the Plants and Cakes bakery, breakfast, pastries and breads are available from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday, and from 8am to 10am on Sunday.

Worth getting out of bed for

Linger a while at the Lindley to make the most of its community spirit: talk shop with young creatives while you’re brewing a cuppa in the kitchen, or swap sightseeing tips over a whisky in the Parlour. Business-savvy Frankfurt may be a city of glass, concrete and steel, but it’s not without a softer side. Head to the Altstadt (the old town) for old-school hospitality and a taste of Äppelwoi, the local take on cider. Start your wanderings at Römerberg, the city’s splendidly mediaeval central square, then stroll down riverside paths, take a breath of fresh air at the Palmengarten (botanic gardens) or make a detour to a tavern for hearty regional fare.

Local restaurants

Feast on no-frills sausages, cured pork chops and sauerkraut at Zum Gemalten Haus; the eggs with green sauce are a good alternative if you’re of a less-carnivorous disposition. At the other end of the culinary spectrum, Seven Swans is known for its stellar vegetarian fare; make sure to book ahead. Margarete is a pared-down bistro serving classic dishes with a twist, such as fennel bratwurst or steak tartare with wasabi mayo. Friendly trattoria A Casa di Tomilaia is all about tempting Italian fare: try the sage-flecked carbonara, or roasted veal with tuna cream and capers.

Local bars

Sip on the region’s famous (and potent) apple wine at Apfelwein Wagner, a rustic spot where you’re likely to share a table a table with locals. To avoid next-day headaches, order it mixed with soda water or lemonade. Hideaway cocktail bar The Kinly artfully mixes louche and laid-back; if you can find the inconspicuous entrance, you’ll be rewarded with playful cocktails and rum-laced bowls of punch.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this urban hotel in Frankfurt and unpacked their bratwurst and apple wine, a full account of their city break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside The Lindley in Frankfurt…

Somewhere between a boutique hotel and a residence, the Lindley encourages guests to linger a while. With seven glass-fronted floors of communal spaces open to public view, this modern dollhouse isn’t shy about showing off its assets. Local design studio Aberja has cleverly separated the living areas with pops of unabashed colour, from the peach-and-taupe restaurant on the ground floor to the aubergine-hued fifth-floor cocktail bar. Clean lines and geometric shapes are spiced up with more sensuous fittings, such as Thonet chairs and vintage Frank Landau chairs. Rooms have been kept deliberately compact and cosy – all the better to venture out into the hotel for a bite to eat, a reading nook or a go on the treadmill. Vegetarian fare takes centre stage at Leuchtendroter, thanks to a nearby permaculture plot that stocks the restaurant’s pantry with organic, biodynamic produce. You’ll find it, too, in the fridges of the community kitchens – just the thing to cook up a midnight feast, should the mood strike you.
