Recommended rooms

Smaller stay Sungai Jungle Villa II is aimed more at couples, but has two extra bedrooms if a couple wants to bring children along. Its interconnecting master suite and second bedroom work well for young families.

Activities

As well as the inviting pool at Sungai, kids will enjoy the villa's bikes, basketball hoop, small mini gym and activities table. Local options include tennis, golf, elephant encounters and trips to a water park, markets or village schools. The nearest beach is a 20-minute drive away, or take the kids to see striking coastal temple Pura Tanah Lot, then cool off in the sea after.

Swimming pool

There are no lifeguards and no pool fences, but babysitters can watch over swimming smalls, and the pool is within view of all poolside loungers and the alfresco dining areas.

Meals

Children are welcome in Sungai Jungle Villa II's dining pavilion at any time, 24-hours a day. A children's menu is available, as well as packed lunches on request, and staff are happy to customise dishes to suit junior tastes. They will also heat up baby food or milk for infants.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Do sunset drinks on the pool deck, dine at the table in the breezy living room, or snack in one of the garden pavilions.

Dress Code

This place has kaftan (or its 21st-century relative the maxi dress) written all over it. Guys can rock a sarong, David Beckham-style. The villas are exclusive hire, so you set the sartorial tone.

Hotel restaurant

The chef is a dab hand with pan-Asian and Australian flavours. Dine on modern interpretations of Indonesian treats include baby snapper steamed with Balinese spices, duck nasi goreng and a decadent full tasting dinner with suckling pig. Leave room for lemongrass and palm sugar panna cotta with orange and chilli caramel, washed down with lemon sorbet vodka shots. The eatery is exclusive to villa guests and their pals, so feel free to put in requests and time meals to suit your plans.

Hotel bar

There's an extensive bar stocked with fruity and potent libations; let the expert barmen mix you one of the island's best cocktails. Alternatively, bring your own duty-free spirits to whip up with the bar's mixers or to help yourself anytime to beers or imported wines, which will be charged back to your room at wholesale rates (there are no in-suite minibars, as sociable quaffing in the open-air bar is the norm). You can also dictate the tunes so bring your iPod, check out the villa's music selection or hire a DJ for special events.

Last orders

Breakfast is served from 7.30am (tea and coffee is available early), but otherwise there are no meal time restrictions. Last orders fit around the last guest standing. The bar stops pouring at 11.30pm.

Room service

There's 24-hour room service, with pretty much anything you want up for grabs anytime, from noodles to steak or burgers. Take a look at chef Wayan's menus for inspiration or indulge in all-day coffee with chocolate biscotti.

Address
Sungai Jungle Villa II
Canggu
Bali
82171
Indonesia

Just a 20-minute drive north of stylish central hub Seminyak, Legian and Kuta Beach, Sungai Jungle Villa II is tucked away in the tranquil traditional village of Cepaka in the Tabanan Regency just inland from Bali's south-west coast and buzzy Canggu.

Planes

Fly into Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport (www.baliairport.com), just south of capital Denpasar, a 45- to 60-minute drive from Sungai Jungle Villa II. The guest services manager will greet you at the airport, or opt to be met right off the plane by the villa butler, who will handle all airport processes, eliminating the need for you to queue. He'll deliver you to the villa's cooled vehicle, waiting with chilled bottled water and refreshing hand-towels, or order champagne on arrival to get you in the holiday mood.

Automobiles

Self-drive isn't the norm for visitors to Bali, and why would you when Sungai Jungle Villa II's rates include chauffeur-driven airport transfers and the option to use the eight-seater vehicle throughout your stay for a small extra charge. The villa is a 35-minute drive from Seminyak; 20 minutes from Canggu; 45 minutes from Ubud or an hour from Jimbaran, Uluwatu or Nusa Dua, all on the south of the island. Expect to see verdant terraced rice fields and lush scenery en route.

Worth getting out of bed for

Sungai Jungle Villa II offers an extensive spa and yoga programme, including massages, body scrubs, waxing, facials or mani-pedis. There are international therapies on offer, such as Swedish, Thai and Shiatsu massage, but we like the idea of the Indonesian local healing arts. The circulation-boosting Balinese deep-tissue massage combines stretching, acupressure and aromatherapy oils to strengthen and balance the body (think rigorous yet luxurious). The body scrubs also draw on regional ingredients, such as mountain coffee, white lulur (a mix of Javanese and Balinese herbs and spices) and Boreh Bali (a blend of fresh clove, pepper, cardamom, ginger and galangal) to make skin smooth and supple. Yoga classes cover various schools, from hatha to ashtanga, with pregnancy and children's yoga available by request.

Further afield, staff can organise village tours, visits to markets, shopping for sarongs and fabrics in local town Kediri or a trip to an elephant park. Nearby resorts offer Sungai guests preferential rates for golf, tennis and the gym. Hiking, white-water rafting and cycling are all options if you want to get your heart pumping, or head for the coast for a spot of swimming, surfing or diving (watch out for those pesky Balinese rips though).

On a cultural tip, you're not far from Bali's artistic heart Ubud, a country town that's home to world-renowned dance, gamelan orchestra music and galleries aplenty, as well as some fun shopping. You'd also be mad to miss a trip to romantic seaside temple Pura Tanah Lot, 15-minutes' drive away on the west coast, which you can team with some beach downtime and a visit to its quirky local markets.

For more sophisticated shopping, as well as some stylish bar- and restaurant-hopping, you'll need to drive down to Seminyak, Bali's beachside take on glam. An alternative is new hotspot Canggu, a 25-minute drive away.

Local restaurants

Head towards Seminyak – about a 35-minute drive – to enjoy some of Bali’s finest restaurants and bars. Watch the sun set with a cocktail, then indulge in tasty Italian fare at beachside La Lucciola, on Oberoi Road. Sit in the frangipani-fringed courtyard or under the thatched roof upstairs. A little closer (25-minute drive), in Canggu, Mason dishes up delicious wood-fired fare and custom cocktails.

Local bars

Como Beach Club, in Canggu, is a long-standing favourite.

It might not seem like the sexiest way to start a holiday, but completing a pile of paperwork as preparation for a stay at Sungai Gold is well worth it. Before we even reach our dreamy villa in Bali, we’ve tackled a wad of personal preference forms – from pick-up details and activities to meal times and menus – but as soon as we touch down on the island we realise it’s the best investment we ever made.

From the moment we’re collected from the airport we’re assured that our meals for the day have been taken care of and can be served anytime upon request. Kids’ food (pre-chosen by us as part of the form-filling) is already being whipped up as we drive, ready for our arrival. Even welcome drinks are being specifically mixed to our taste.

This is the real strength of Sungai Gold – its team’s ability to anticipate guests’ needs and fulfill all those little requests that turn holiday accommodation into something more like a home away from home. Because I’m travelling with a friend, not a partner, the staff opens up an additional bedroom for us in the exclusive-hire villa, which usually caters to a couple. Once we’re settled in, a tub of toys, colouring kit, water floats and a slide for the infinity pool are installed for the child we have in tow.

Everything is chic and white, just as you’d expect in a contemporary Balinese villa. Soft mosquito nets drape romantically over a four-poster bed, floors and walls are pale and clean, and super-comfy pool recliners and vibrant frangipanis dot the space. We’re wowed by the large day-bed and shaded deck area, Bose sound system (frustratingly not working during our stay), outdoor bathrooms with rainwater showerheads and communal dining, but the star of the show is definitely the infinity pool overlooking a small creek surrounded by beautiful tropical greenery. Even once the children’s playthings arrive, the villa still manages to look as cool as a cucumber.

What makes Sungai Gold stand out from its counterparts, though, are the tiny details. A well stocked fridge, significantly larger than a typical hotel minibar, full of soft drinks, lime wedges, mixers and, most importantly, cold beers. Wet towels silently and instantly replaced with fresh, dry ones. A private live performance of traditional music presented during our first night’s dinner as a welcome surprise. Ziplock bags to store wet bathers on check-out and earplugs and eye masks for the flight home.

As the villa is based in the small inland village of Cepaka many activities are a commute away, but since we are after a no-thinking, complete chill-out break, it’s perfect. Spa services come to us in-villa and, at the staff’s recommendation, we’re happy to rely on the chef’s expertise and dine in for all our meals. To be honest, we don’t ever want to leave.

A short stroll to the local kindergarten and primary school is our only external activity – another great Sungai suggestion – where we donate pens and pencils and interact with the children. It’s a heart-warming reminder of the other side of life in Bali.

Perhaps the one inconvenience that always accompanies a villa stay is that we have to commit to meal choices hours before we even develop an appetite, to give the staff time to shop in the local markets. Meals are served family style, which means everyone has to agree on the same thing and you are only charged additionally for the ingredients.

Even on departure day, nothing is too much trouble. We have revolting late-night flights so Sungai Gold offers us multiple choices in the event that the villa cannot guarantee a late check-out. This includes an arrangement with Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali Resort where, for a nominal fee, we can use their facilities. Sungai still plans to take care of the luggage and pick-up for the airport transfer. Luckily for us, a late check-out is available in the end and the staff is extremely accommodating – we are clearly told to use the facilities at our leisure and pleasure until it’s time to go.

Finally, the great paper trail leads us to this conclusion – it’s all smart stepping-stones to ensure Sungai Gold can meet every guest’s individual needs. And they certainly strive to do this well. They are open to feedback and quick to provide a solution to every scenario. No stay is ever perfect, but since Sungai tries so hard, they come pretty close.
