The Two- to Four-Bedroom Ocean View Residences offer extra space for families and friends travelling together. Bedrooms lead straight out onto a decked terrace with a private infinity pool and lots of comfy sunloungers, from which you can gaze out over the aquamarine waters. The cosy, secluded One-Bedroom Residences are ideal for couples; each has a large, jungle-sheltered private pool.
You’ll never want for a serene swimming at Sugar Beach; there’s a large, heated outdoor pool for all guests by the main hotel, which has breathtaking views of the Piton mountains. Supervised children can splash about here, too. Each room also has either its own Jacuzzi, plunge pool or infinity pool, depending on the category.
From the wooden treehouse-style structures to the products used, the Rainforest Spa is all natural.The nine treatment rooms, temascal (a traditional, Amerindian, stone steam room warmed by volcanic spring water), and relaxation area with natural pools and streams are reached by walkways winding through the jungle; there’s also a fully-equipped gym. Both adults and children can indulge in the spa’s Caribbean-inspired treatments. Enjoy a chocolate scrub, a soothing honey-and-chamomile body treatment, or get your caffeine fix for the day with a Caribbean coffee scrub and massage. The spa has two couples treatment rooms with private outdoor heated pools and a number of specially-designed treatments; for the ultimate couple’s getaway try the Sulfur Seduction experience which includes a mud bath in nearby sulfuric springs, a trip to Piton waterfalls and a back massage.

Dine on the beach, sip champagne on the pier: the hotel’s your oyster. Once you’ve chosen the time and place, the hotel’s chef will devise a personalised menu to suit the setting.

There’s no need to stray far from your sunlounger: take lunch at the Bayside Restaurant, which lies a mere few feet away from the crystal-clear waters of the Anse des Pitons bay. Secure a table under the straw roof and enjoy pizzas, salads, wraps and local classics like jerk chicken, coconut shrimp and conch stew. The dinner menu has decadent Creole delights, such as rum-flambéed crayfish, pasta tossed with fresh sea catches and Zarzuela (a Spanish-inflected fish stew). For more discerning diners, order one of the tasting menus served in the Great Room Restaurant, which is lit by candlelight. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, in high season, the Terrace becomes the pop-up restaurant Machou, where family-style French feasting kicks off at 7pm.
Drinks all around! The hotel has three bars and you can order chilled cocktails, refreshing smoothies and other soft drinks to your sunlounger on the beach. Take tea at the Palm Court Lounge and return in the early evening for a pre-dinner pinot noir or beer. Sip cocktails and ‘mocktails’ on the seashore at Bayside Bar, or for a more stylish setting, head to Cane Bar and ask the ‘rummelier’ for his pick of Saint Lucia’s finest.
Breakfast is served at the Terrace from 7am–10.30am. Bayside Restaurant serves lunch from 12.30pm–3pm and dinner from 6pm–10pm. Dinner in the Great Room is from 6.30pm–10.30pm. Bayside Bar pours drinks till 11pm, Cane Bar till 1am.
A menu of juicy burgers, crispy pizzas and sweet treats is available 24/7. You can dine in-room for breakfast (7am-11am) and dinner (5pm-10pm) on a menu of flank-steak skewers, home-made pappardelle pasta and fresh sushi and sashimi.

On the south west coast of Saint Lucia, Sugar Beach's colonial-style villas are surrounded by tropical rainforest and golden-sand beaches; the resort is less than a 15-minute drive from the town of Soufrière.
The closest international hub is Hewanorra Airport, roughly a 45-minute drive from the resort. If jetting in from one of the Caribbean islands, fly into George F L Charles Airport, which is just under a 90-minute drive away. Whether you’re sailing through the Windward Isles or just want to pop over to a neighbouring island for a day, there are marinas all over Saint Lucia; the closest port is in Soufrière, a 20-minute drive north of the hotel.
Worth getting out of bed for
As well as a wide variety of on-site activities, such as volleyball, tennis, scuba-diving, kayaking and other water-y fun, the hotel offers day trips around the island. Hike Gros Piton mountain or follow a nature trail through the rainforest, pausing for a refreshing dip in Superman Falls at the end. For history fans and those with a sweet tooth, a tour of an 18th-century chocolate-and-sugar plantation is a must. Thrill-seekers can zip-line through Banyan trees, drive ATVs along the coast and mountain bike in the jungle, or ride horses through banana plantations. For the seafaring, Smith24 can organise whale- and dolphin-watching, or hire of the hotel’s boat for a day, so you can explore Saint Lucia’s shoreline at your own speed.
Explore the world’s only ‘drive-in’ volcano at the Sulphur Springs near Soufrière, and end a walk around the 45-hectare site – filled with bubbling hot springs and shooting steam – with a refreshing and purifying mud bath, and a soak in a sulphur spring. You can also try a sulphuric dip in the nearby Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens; this site is also home one of the island's prettiest waterfalls.
Plantation-to-plate is the philosophy behind Fond Doux hotel’s Bamboo Restaurant. Set into the side of the jungle, the open-air restaurant is surrounded by lush exotic plants; stop for lunch to truly appreciate its tropical setting. Chocolate-lovers can eat their fill at chic Willy Wonka factory, Hotel Chocolat’s Boucan restaurant, less than a 15-minute drive away from the resort in the foothills of Jalousle. Perched on the side of the hill, Boucan overlooks the Piton mountains and the bay beyond. The menu features all kinds of savoury and sweet treats made with the hotel’s own cacao beans and herbs, locally-sourced fruit and veggies, and caught-that-morning fish. Try cacao gin-cured mahi mahi for starters, followed by cacao beer-jerked pork tenderloin and a three-part, chocolate ice-cream dessert, all washed down with a cacao-infused martini or a banana-chocolate daiquiri. For laid-back dining, head to Orlando’s Restaurant and Bar in Soufrière. Take a seat in the cool courtyard garden and enjoy ti manje (the local term for small plates) packing big flavours. Chef Orlando is on a mission to get Caribbean cuisine internationally recognised; and, after a few bites of his saltfish cakes or spicy grilled lamb, you’ll be singing his praises back home.
About a 15-minute drive away on Jalousie Road, Martha’s Tables is a laid-back, low-key café at the foot of Saint Lucia’s jungle-covered mountains. Take a seat by the lime-green-and-orange bar and enjoy Martha’s classic Creole cuisine of crispy breadfruit balls, huge servings of chicken and beans, and shrimp with fried bananas. On the Soufrière shoreline, Le Petit Peak is a relaxed seafront restaurant that’s popular with tourists and locals alike. It’s open for lunch and dinner, but to catch the bay at its best, take a seat by the window at noon or have an early dinner as the sun sets. The menu is full of simple Caribbean dishes with a selection of rotis, salads, wraps and sea-fresh fish.
There are lots of local bars in Soufrière for a chilled bottle of beer or rum cocktail. For a drink with bay views and a show, head to Mango Tree at Stonefield Villa Resort. Stop by on a Sunday for lazy drinks while a live steel-pan band plays. On Thursdays the party kicks up a notch, with a live DJ, limbo-dancing and fire-eaters.
