Setting

Fine-knit New Jersey

New Jersey stalwart Stockton Inn has been the place to be — and be seen — for centuries. Ella Fitzgerald sang about its wishing well; Margaret Mitchell allegedly penned parts of Gone with the Wind here, and now, chef Bob Truitt and bartender Brian Miller have spun it into a culinary hotspot. Discerning diners flock for its seasonal plates and signature cocktails, and stay for its swishly restored interiors, tub-toting rooms and low-key Americana locale. We think the best is yet to come…

Need to know

Rooms

Nine, including one suite.

Check–Out

11am; check-in, 3pm. Both are flexible, on request and subject to availability.

More details

Rates at Stockton Inn usually exclude breakfast, which can be bought at neighboring Stockton Market for around $20. The hotel and its restaurants are open from Wednesday to Sunday, and there’s a two-night minimum stay over weekends.

Also

The suite in Carriage House Two (Room Nine) is adapted for wheelchair users and has a roll-in, rainfall shower with grab bars. You’ll also find that both restaurants are accessible.

At the hotel

Free WiFi throughout. In rooms: TV, Bluetooth speaker, climate control, minibar, free bottled water, Dyson hairdryer, bathrobes, slippers and Penhaligon’s bath products.

Our favourite rooms

Stockton Inn’s notable legacy has made it a convivial hub for singers, writers and, now, foodies. But the buzz of story-telling chatter subsides in its soft-hued rooms, which soothe with exposed stonework and local artwork. Room One, a Main Inn King, is spacious and bright, and has a shared balcony, bouclé chaise lounge and his-and-hers sinks. Room Seven in Carriage House Two has all the frills for a cozy sojourn: vaulted ceilings, a freestanding bath tub, and a gas fireplace.

Packing tips

A couple of quarters to flick into the time-hallowed wishing well.

Also

Staff know the best therapists in town for a massage and can arrange one in your room on request.

Pet‐friendly

Rooms in the Carriage Houses accommodate pets under 40 pounds, who can stay for $75 a night each; the main inn and restaurants are for humans only. See more pet-friendly hotels in New Jersey.

Children

Welcome, but this epicurean retreat is better suited to grown-ups. There’s a double sofa-bed in Carriage House Two’s suite, which can be made up on request; free baby cribs can be added to some rooms on request.

Food and Drink

Top Table

By the fireplace in Dog & Deer Tavern, or beside the terrace-framed windows in Finch; in summer, you can dine alfresco.

Dress Code

This isn’t your traditional tavern: you’ll want to look as smart as the polished plates for both restaurants.

Hotel restaurant

Like a good date, your hosts at Stockton Inn will wine and dine you. Fine Finch is an intimate space for seasonal dinners, masterminded by chef Bob Truitt. The four-course menus change often, but you can expect to find fusion fare such as sunchoke mezza luna pasta with brown butter, alongside pan-roasted kampachi with sea urchin crema. A step above your average pub, Dog & Deer Tavern is a refined-yet-relaxed spot for American classics with Finch’s same Earth-kind approach. Share — or fight over — East Coast oysters and maple-butter brioche; the Comté-topped patty melt is a local favorite. Though you’ll want to save room for both, we don’t advise holding out till evening; the hotel’s Stockton Market lies just across the street and supplies breakfast brews and snacks, plus healthy all-day dishes.

Hotel bar

When it comes to drinks at Stockton Inn, the (figurative) bar is high: Brian Miller is a big name in the bartending world, and is stirring up new and lost-to-time creations at Dog & Deer Tavern. The Jack Rose is a modern version of a cocktail that dates back a century; at the Inn, it’s now laced with apple brandy, framboise liqueur and Domaine de Montreuil calvados. You’ll also find a list of around-the-world wines and spirits, plus close-to-home craft ales.

Last orders

Both restaurants are dinner-only and open Wednesday to Sunday, from 5pm until 9pm; Dog & Deer Tavern pours drinks until 10pm. Booking in advance is recommended for both.

United States

Centuries-old Stockton Inn resides in its quaint, namesake town on the banks of the Delaware River, along New Jersey’s verdant border with Pennsylvania.

Planes

Trenton-Mercer Airport is a 25-minute drive from Stockton; Pennsylvania’s Philadelphia International Airport and New York City’s Newark Liberty are each an hour away by road.

Automobiles

You’ll want your own set of wheels for taking in the region’s picturesque towns and hiking trails, plus NYC is under a 90-minute drive away. There’s free parking with electric-vehicle charging points at the hotel.

Worth getting out of bed for

You’ll be encouraged to embrace a slower pace of life at Stockton Inn. If you’re an out-of-towner from New York City or Philadelphia (each under a 90-minute drive away) who’s struggling to shift gears, toss a coin into the historic wishing well and ask fate to intervene. Pootle around petite Stockton, or head to riverside neighbors Frenchtown and New Hope to mooch in charming boutiques and cafés. A long, leafy towpath runs along the Delaware River, an idyllic route for rambles, cycles or horse rides. After an active day, you might like something to take the edge off: check the hotel’s calendar for cocktail-making masterclasses with the Brian Miller.

Local restaurants

Finnbar is the kind of restaurant that you might see on social media and immediately add to your restaurant wishlist. We have at least, for its Italian-inspired dishes of pillowy focaccia, homemade pasta and ice-cool martinis. True to its name, Tavola Rustica is a rustic-luxe local spot for burrata boards and generously topped pizzas (just save some room for the traditional olive oil cake). The mosaic-like ceiling at Under the Moon Cafe is just as eye-catching as the brunch offerings and tapas towers, and any munchies are cured with its late-night weekend menu.

Local cafés

The Inn’s sister café-slash-shop, Stockton Market, is just across the street, serving energy-boosting coffees, buttery pastries and seasonal all-day bites. Perfect Day Cafe will set yours up similarly with its give-you-a-buzz brews and tempting sweet treats.

Local bars

Swoop by low-key Odd Bird Brewing for a velvety stout or fruity ale. The Salt House is a long-standing tavern that shakes up punchy cocktails and pours local pints.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this heritage hotel on the East Coast and unpacked their cocktail recipes and boutique finds, a full account of their small-town break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Stockton Inn in New Jersey…

There’s plenty to pique your interest at Stockton Inn — its history-rich roots and town-dotted riverside setting are just the start. Originally built in 1710, the inn and its accompanying carriage houses have since lived several lives: a prohibition-era speakeasy, various hotels and restaurants, the musical inspiration for a track covered by Ella Fitzgerald and Tony Bennett… But its current form is set to stick, especially with contemporary-yet-cozy interiors, bright art-filled bedrooms, and two top dining spots.

Dog & Deer Tavern brings a luxe touch to Stateside classics and designed-to-share starters (the same rules don’t apply for dessert); and behind its bar, lauded mixologist Brian Miller whips up a mean cocktail. At elegant Finch, set menus vary with the seasons, but locally sourced ingredients and modern European flavours are year-round staples.

Stockton Inn won’t only pique your interest, it’ll whet your appetite.
