Worth getting out of bed for
Get a literal taste of local traditions with a visit to the staff Chinese doctor for herbal tinctures at the hotel, then head out for more Chinese culture with a stroll along the narrow streets of Chinatown, a short walk from the hotel, where century-old buildings hold bustling restaurants and shops packed with colourful souvenirs. Stop by the Chinatown Heritage Centre, which preserves daily items from last century for a taste of what life was like long before smart phones.
The island is packed with interesting museums, including the palatial National Museum of Singapore, for rich historical artifacts about the country, dating back to before colonization, and the Asian Civilisations Museum, for a deep dive into the art and culture of Southeast Asia. The museum’s riverside location is ideal for a stroll to see some of the historic houses and interesting shops along the way.
For a birds-eye look at the island, grab a ticket for the Singapore Flyer, the local version of the London Eye. Standing 165m tall, the ferris wheel offers the best views in the country. If jetlag has you up before dawn, take advantage of the extended hours at the Botanic Gardens. Open each day from 5am until midnight, the 74-hectare tropical garden has gorgeous orchids and palms, and is an oasis from the bustling city.
Local restaurants
Tanjong Pagar, the hotel’s neighborhood, is home to the highest concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants in the country. Head out in search of the best of the best, including Rhubarb, for contemporary French dishes including an excellent assortment of French cheese. For casual local favourites, try the Hainanese chicken rice at the Maxwell Centre (1 Kadayanallur Street), at stalls like Tian Tian Chicken Rice. The French food in Singapore is surprisingly excellent. Brasserie Gavroche, near the hotel, nails the Parisian vibe with stellar steak tartare.
Local bars
For a sweet and retro taste of tradition, head to the bar at Raffles Hotel for a Singapore Sling – the fruity gin-based drink was invented here in the early 1900s. For a modern taste of the cool Singapore cocktail scene, visit Kilo Lounge, by the Kallang River, for cocktails like the East Meets West, made with Japanese whiskey, orgeat syrup and Scotch, to pair with small plates like furikake popcorn drizzled with spicy honey.
