Style

Airily shipshape

Setting

Canary mellow

You don’t have to be a mind-reader to know what inspired Tenerife-born architect Leonardo Omar when he designed Royal Hideaway Corales Suites. The staggered white terraces of this luxury family hotel – which jut cruise ship-like above the black sands of La Enramada Beach – are home to sparklingly spacious apartment-style suites, all with sea views from their private sundecks. Luckily, that’s where the cruise-ship similarities end. A sea-rivalling heated saltwater pool – Canarian cuisine enjoyed alfresco and children’s activities to occupy every age are worth getting on board with. And, the villagey charms of La Caleta are just a flip-flopped amble away…

Our favourite rooms

As the floors get higher, the sea views get better and the peace increases. Villa suites, secluded below the main hotel, all have private pools and uninterrupted ocean views.

Poolside

There is a gated and heated outdoor, saltwater pool, which is tended by a lifeguard daily and locked at night. Some suites have private pools for a dip straight off the deck, and if you’re leaving the Little Smith’s in the kid’s club there are two adults-only pools (one up on the roof) at the adults-only Royal Hideaway Corales Beach, next door.

Spa

Tiptoe over the grass to sister property Corales Beach to use the spa. Its relaxation pool, steam room and sauna are open to Suites guests aged 16 or over, as is its menu of body and beauty treatments. If your suite has a private pool, you can book a floating mindfulness and massage session.

Packing tips

Even with no plans to swim, you’ll need bathers to spare your modesty at the unisex spa. Mr Smith will need trousers and closed shoes to meet the evening restaurant dress code.

Also

All communal areas are wheelchair and pushchair friendly, and there is a pool hoist but no wheelchair-accessible suites. Eight suites at sister property Royal Hideaway Corales Beach are adapted for wheelchair access.

Children

All ages are welcome and even the smallest suites sleep two adults and two children (in one double and one sofa bed). Extra beds and cots (for under-4s) can be added to all rooms, and babysitting’s available with 24 hours notice (for an extra charge).

Best for

All ages.

Recommended rooms

All suites are spacious enough to host families; as a minimum, there is room for one extra bed and a cot or cot bed in the smallest suites.

Activities

The kid’s club is open to children aged four to 12, and activities are arranged each day around a particular interest, such as science, drama, art or the environment. The idea is to encourage supervised free play that helps Little Smiths discover new interests and develop new skills.

Swimming pool

The family-friendly saltwater pool is heated, and there’s a separate paddling pool. Both are gated and locked at night, and a lifeguard is in attendance from 10.30am till 6pm.

Meals

Highchairs are provided, but you’ll need your own bibs. There’s no children’s sitting – the emphasis here is on relaxed family dining, and both restaurants serve menus devised with children in mind, with the buffet set-up at Olivia Mediterranean Market especially helpful if you have fussy eaters in tow. The kitchens are happy to adapt dishes on request where possible, and will heat milk or baby food. All suites have a minibar with a selection of soft drinks, and there’s space in your suite fridge for all the snacks and baby food you need.

Babysitting

You can book a babysitter for €18 an hour with 24 hours’ notice.

No need to pack

An exhaustive first aid kit: hotel staff can arrange medical assistance at any time.

Also

There’s no baby listening, and the size of the hotel makes baby monitors impractical.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Any of the outdoor tables at Starfish play the hotel’s joker card of fabulous sea views and a side of Canarian sunshine. By night, they feel extra special, with tables dressed with linen and candles, serving up romance as well as finely grilled fish.

Dress Code

There’s no dress code for breakfast, but smart-casual is the way to go for dinner, and both restaurants request that Mr Smith dons closed shoes and long trousers in the evening.

Hotel restaurant

Il Bocconcino by Royal Hideaway brings a little Italian gastronomy to the Canary Islands, with lively cooking on show in the open kitchen, an elaborate (pasta-and-risotto-packed) tasting menu and a sea-facing terrace. Be sure to book. La Trattoría de Il Bocconcino simplifies things a little, serving homemade pizzas and traditional pasta dishes. Breakfasts at Olivia run the gamut from fruit, yogurt and cereals through pastries to eggs. Poolside Starfish morphs from a Mediterranean restaurant at lunchtimes, serving salads, paellas, seafood and a few meat dishes, into Starfish Grill by evening, when tables are dressed in their linened best and the menu is à la carte, with surf and turf grills stealing the show. La Gelateria serves as both ice-cream parlour and bar, its home-made gelato cool and tempting.

Hotel bar

The Starfish is the hotel’s poolside bar, serving snacks, coffees and cocktails.

Last orders

Breakfast is served at Olivia until 10.30am; lunch between 12.30 and 3.30pm, and dinner until 9:30pm. Il Bocconcino by Royal Hideaway opens for dinner from 6.30pm to 9.30pm, Tuesday to Saturday.

Room service

Order meals and treats off the dedicated room service menu to your suite throughout the day and night.

Worth getting out of bed for

Think of the choice of activities at Royal Hideaway Corales Suites as tapas: there’s temptation everywhere, but only so much you can take on. A game of golf, vineyard tours, stargazing, surfing and diving... This is a menu to dip into, between laps of the pool and stints at the beach. The hotel has a brilliant programme of exclusive experiences that allow you to tick off typical Tenerifan activities with an experienced guide, as well as a handful of VIP touches. Take the hike to Mount Teide: guiding, permits to summit the volcano and cable-car transfers are all taken care of. All you need to bring is enough energy to trek for five hours. A much shorter walk away is Costa Adeje Golf Course: this coastal course has 18 holes and a putting green and is worth packing your clubs for. Stargazing in Tenerife is neck-craningly wondrous away from the resort glare, and an ingenious way to achieve optimum conditions is on a night cruise, organised through the hotel, which involves a gourmet dinner washed down with constellations seen through a telescope in the company of a ‘sky coach. Volcanic cliffs plunge into the sea at El Hierro, making it a sealife-rich playground for scuba divers: the hotel can organise a taster for the uninitiated, or a guided plunge for qualified divers. The island’s zoo Loro Parque and water park Siam Park & Beach are two Tenerife classics that can be tailored with an all-day VIP experience for a unique take. You’ll get access to special areas at the zoo, getting up close with the penguins and seals, and learn about all the different residents from wildlife experts. The trip to Siam Park includes exclusive sunset access to the beach, and an artificial waves session tailored to your desires.

Local restaurants

A table on the terrace makes all the difference at Saúco in Alcalá: a lunch spot to linger at, this Italian abroad has stonebaked pizza, fresh pasta and a choice of antipasti that make it hard to bypass starters. For a laid-back supper to savour, make the short walk to El Caldero in La Caleta: it’s best described in two words: fabulous paella. Also small but wondrous is the tastier-than-it-sounds Mediterranean-meets-Mexican mash-up at Lupulo. A special occasion calls for the culinary wizardry of a night across the road at Padrón brothers’ rooftop restaurant Maresía at sister property Royal Hideaway Corales Beach – it’s all veloutés, artisanal vinegars, tiny stews and deliciously odd desserts. And, the menu at La Brasserie by Pierre Résimont – an engaging read with foie-gras spread on spiced bread, lamb with smoky aubergine purée and such – shows why the skilled Belgian chef has a restaurant named after him.

Local bars

It’s not often we recommend gin from a teapot or drinking cocktails out of a bag, but Lagarto in La Caleta is well known for its arresting menu of novelty concoctions. And, should you brave it with children in tow, their non-alcoholic options are cleverly sweet and quirky.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this luxury family hotel in Tenerife and unpacked their lava beads and honey rum, a full account of their Canary Island break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Royal Hideaway Corales Suites in Tenerife.

Don’t let the double-height lobby etched out of the rock mislead you – this is no cave hotel. Royal Hideaway Corales Suites has far too much sun-drenched light for that; far too much crisply modern space. And there’s nothing subterranean about its vista-affording perch, looking over the glinting Atlantic towards La Gomera, with seductive sea views from all of its suites. Then there’s the warmth: not only from the Canarian sunshine, but also the staff, as friendly and attentive as you’d want them to be. Everything from the kid’s club to the gelateria articulates why this is a luxury hotel just made for families. But there’s the happiness of its geography, too: you can enjoy the ease of being on the island’s well connected southerly coast, simultaneously cocooned in the calm of La Caleta, where the restaurants, bars and coastal charms are as authentic as the black sand between your toes.
