Setting

Calm Medina courtyard

Mixing Moroccan tradition with modern minimalism in the heart of Marrakech’s bustling Medina, Riad Brummell cleverly manages to feel hip, homely, and hyper-local all at once. Desert-rose tadelakt walls house hand-poured terrazzo floors and artisan-crafted furnishings, with plenty of sun-dappled seating spread across the courtyard’s alcoves and the pool-crowned rooftop. The help-yourself snack bar and open kitchen invite relaxed dining throughout the day, with the distant Atlas Mountains to admire and neighbouring bazaars to browse at your leisure.

Need to know

Rooms

Five, plus a standalone, four-bedroom annex that's ideal for group stays.

Check–Out

Noon, but flexible, subject to availability. Earliest check-in, 3pm.

More details

Rates include a buffet breakfast of local delicacies, such as baghrir pancakes, orange-zested flatbreads, and fresh mint tea. The annex must be booked for a minimum of three nights.

Also

Unfortunately, Riad Brummell isn’t accessible for guests with limited mobility.

At the hotel

Rooftop terrace, courtyard, honesty bar and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: air-conditioning, free bottled water, minibar and Botanika Marrakech bath products.

Our favourite rooms

We’d take any one of the three Medina Deluxe rooms on the riad’s first floor, each with a handcrafted brass bath tub and indoor-outdoor living rooms with fireplaces for chillier evenings. Groups will want the four-bedroom, four-bathroom annex, which you can book for exclusive use.

Poolside

Flanked by orange tasselled parasols, desert-brown daybeds and elegant cacti, Riad Brummell’s rooftop plunge pool overlooks the Medina and Atlas Mountains. Help yourself to the honesty bar for refreshments throughout the day, and there are traditional palm leaf hats dotted around to keep you looking and feeling cool. There’s also a teardrop-shaped private plunge pool in the Annex House.

Packing tips

You’re just steps away from the Medina’s many street vendors and ateliers selling all manner of treasures and trinkets (we’d even be tempted to bring an extra suitcase for good measure).

Also

The original waha o gaza (beam and plank) ceilings are worth a closer look, casting intricate shadows across the courtyard and inner walls.

Children

This is an adults-only stay.

Sustainability efforts

This plastic-free riad is kitted out with solar panels and refillable bathroom products, and sources most of its ingredients for traditional Moroccan dishes straight from the neighbouring souks.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Closest to the kitchen counter so you can watch the chefs at work.

Dress Code

Colourful kaftans and loose-fitting linens will see you through pool dips and open-air grazing.

Hotel restaurant

Less restaurant, more open kitchen (decked out with vintage folding chairs by Egon Eiermann), dining at Riad Brummell is casual, comforting and convivial. Spice-laced meals are whipped up by chefs on demand (and depending on what could be sourced from the souks that morning), with classics such as kefta kebabs, lemon-infused chicken tagine, and hearty harira soup making up the dinner offering. Daytime dishes include light salads, fruit platters, and the chef’s take on a club sandwich, with locally made Koulchi pop sorbet if you’re craving something sweet. You can also get hands-on in a traditional cooking class using ingredients from the city’s markets.

Hotel bar

There’s an honesty bar on the rooftop which is stocked with local snacks and thirst-quenchers (with cups of mint tea always at the ready).

Last orders

Breakfast is from 8.30am to 11am, lunch from noon to 7pm, and dinner from 7pm to 9pm.

Marrakech’s Menara is the closest airport, around 20 minutes’ drive from the hotel. Transfers are available for €15 (one-way, for up to four passengers) and you’ll need to book at least 24 hours in advance.

The hotel is located within the car-free Medina, leaving little need for a set of wheels.

Worth getting out of bed for

The Medina’s medley of sights, sounds and smells are on Riad Brummell’s doorstep, so it’s worth dedicating an early morning to the nearby souks when browsing (and bartering) is calmest. The palatial grandeur of Dar El Bacha is eight minutes away on foot from the hotel, where beautifully restored zellige tile work and carved cedar wood ceilings are on dazzling display within the Museum of Confluences. Under 10 minutes’ walk in the other direction, the archives at Maison de la Photographie delve into Morocco’s history from 1860 onwards through prints, postcards, ceramics, and archived objects. Just across the Medina is Le Jardin Secret, a pair of pretty courtyards dotted with exotic plants, gurgling fountains, and shaded benches. Beyond the Red City, the hotel can arrange hot-air ballooning over the Atlas Mountains, camel treks through the Agafay Desert, and guided visits to Berber villages.

Local restaurants

The glittering green zellige tiles and verdant terrace aren’t the only siren calls drawing diners to Le Jardin in the heart of the Medina. The highlight of the menu is the ‘eat local’ section, which celebrates traditional dishes like slow-roasted mechoui lamb shoulder, chicken tagine, and couscous with seasonal veggies. We’d recommend pre-ordering the tanjia (which is cooked over six hours in ash-filled, earthenware jars) when you reserve your rooftop table at La Terrasse des Épices, followed by the signature chocolate pastilla. For an Italian interlude, head to the citrus-scented courtyard at Limoni, a pasta house fusing Mediterranean and Moroccan flavours with an easygoing atmosphere.

Local cafés

Pop by Chez Bismilah after admiring the architectural beauty of Ben Youssef Medersa. Every cup from this tiny coffee stand is made the traditional Saharian way by friendly owner Rahil by mixing spices, iced water and ground coffee, before gently warming the brew in brass pots over hot sand.

Local bars

Time your visit to the Kabana rooftop for just before sunset on a weekend to sink argan sours overlooking Koutoubia’s intricate minaret. The DJ sets and live Latin music usually pick up after dark, so stick around for a few more drinks (and excellent ceviche).

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Riad Brummell in Morocco…

Riad Brummell’s at-first-glance minimalism is certainly easy on the eye, and the more you look, the more thoughtfully curated details you’ll see (and want to take note of). Not long after Maison Brummell Majorelle flourished in a verdant corner of the Red City did the Barcelona-based brand plant their second seed for an equally styled-up stay — this time, within the Medina walls. Much of what you’ll sit on, sleep in, and eat from in this reimagined 19th-century palace was handmade especially for Riad Brummell (some of which was even sculpted on-site) by creative brothers Rachid and Abdessamia Bargamane. Artisanal features include metalwork paintings, brass bath tubs and fibreglass bar stools, alongside Berber bowls and vintage rugs sourced from the Bab El Khemis market, married with a few Spanish favourites such as Santa Living soft furnishings. Continue contemplating the design (and day’s adventures) from a hand-poured pink terrazzo bench or dusky-hued daybed, either by the pool or softly spouting fountain.
