Setting

Neighbouring the Forum

Sure, there’s a Fendi-curated art gallery on the ground floor, but the serviced apartments at remodelled palazzo Rhinoceros Roma are like art installations themselves. Walls are a partially unwrapped storyboard of bare brickwork, left-in-place graffiti or half-stripped wallpaper; your bed may be on wheels; perhaps your ensuite is mid-suite, encased in sleek panels of stainless steel. These playful interiors are the work of starred architect Jean Nouvel who, in incorporating details from the palazzo’s past, shows a reverence for its legacy. And what a spot in which to revere history: at the heart of the Velabro neighbourhood, you’re surrounded by Roman relics, brushing shoulders with Palatine Hill, the Circus Maximus and the once-buried ruins of the Forum.

Our favourite rooms

All suite apartments come with the kind of generous footprint other city centre hotels can only dream of, but it’s the Suite Apartment Double that stands out for its easy-on-the-eye exposed brickwork and rooftop views from the bath.

Packing tips

A capsule wardrobe of fine knits, sharp tailoring and a selection of sunglasses is all you need in the Italian capital. Add jewellery that doubles as sculpture as a nod to your aesthetic surroundings.

The hotel is the vision of Alda Fendi, daughter of the fashion-house founders, whose art foundation, headquartered in situ, curates the ground-floor gallery. Visiting shows and serial collaborations keep the gallery’s calendar busy.

Top Table

It’s the sofas you want for drinks – and any outdoor table for sweeping city vistas with your secondi.

Dress Code

Attracting gallery visitors as well as apartment guests, Entr’acte is a discerning venue worthy of the finer threads in your wardrobe.

Hotel restaurant

Scintillating views of the city’s roofs and domes can be committed to memory from its plump-cushioned sofas, sipping Apérol Spritz, thanks to the hotel’s rooftop bar-restaurant, Entr’acte, whose extensive wine list matched in appeal by its lively atmosphere. For diners staying past aperitivi, there’s a menu of artily presented (natch) Italian dishes such as grilled octopus with fennel and grapefruit, and herb-seasoned fillet of beef with béarnaise sauce to enjoy in either the brick-walled dining room or alfresco on the terrace.

Hotel bar

Entr’acte serves an impressive selection of largely Italian wines by the bottle or glass, including Franciacorta fizz, bold Barbarescos and fine whites from Friuli Venezia Giulia alongside spirits and soft drinks. And, naturally, there’s a choice of caffè.

Last orders

Lunch is served 12.30pm–3.30pm and dinner, 7.30pm–11.30pm; the bar is open from 11am–12 midnight.

Room service

There’s no room service at Rhinoceros Roma, but breakfast orders are delivered to your door.

Address
Rhinoceros Roma
Via del Velabro 9
Rome
00186
Italy

At the heart of Rome in the Velabro neighbourhood, Rhinoceros is hemmed in by history, with the Forum to one side, the Circus Maximus on the other.

Planes

Roma Fiumicino International (FCO) is around 45 minutes away by road. The hotel can arrange transfers from around €50 each way.

Trains

Roma Termini is a 15-minute cab ride away.

Automobiles

Driving in Rome is only for the most determined of charioteers. There’s no parking on site, but public parking and private garages are available nearby.

Worth getting out of bed for

Circus Maximus these days is akin to a vast lawned stadium, but was the site of chariot racing and gladiatorial combat in Julius Caesar’s time. The impressive jumble of ruined temples and monuments at the Forum are pretty much your neighbours. As well as the art gallery at the hotel, make a date with these addresses for art lovers… Galleria Lorcan O’Neill is a Trastavere spot showcasing living artists such as Kiki Smith, Giorgio Griffa and local hero Gianni Politi. Curating 21st-century art and architecture, Maxxi – a 20-minute cab ride away – is worth visiting for its Zaha Hadid-designed setting as much as its collections. Open-air Museo Condominiale di Tor Marancia is an entire neighbourhood transformed by street art. A trove of marbles, frescoes and salvaged architectural relics await at Museo Palatino. And the flea markets of Mercato di Porta Portese are just across the river.

Local restaurants

Pale wood, white walls and brick arches create a bright and airy backdrop at Dillà, which serves a Roman menu of excellent pasta, seafood and roasted meat, bolstered by top-notch puds and a serious wine cellar; its pair of marble pillars, dating from imperial times, are impressive, too. One trip is not enough to make a dent in the versatile pan-Italian menu at Roscioli – a deli and kitchen where appetisers such as Piedmont beef tartare and Sicilian red tuna with grilled artichokes vye for your attention with mains such as fillet of turbot with millefeuille potatoes and herb-crusted loin of lamb. Through an unassuming, lantern-lit doorway on Piazza delle Cinque Scole you can dine like a local at traditional trattoria Sora Margherita, which serves a daily-changing menu of hearty Roman dishes such as pasta e fagioli and osso buco.

I'll briefly skip to the would-be addendum of this tale and get it out of the way – and I will stress it was no fault of the hotel whatsoever. We did, dear reader, end up getting towed. Yep, towed. Nothing like an unadvertised marathon to clear the streets…

But, anyway, the wheels did not come off our 72-hour escape, so this is my first tip to you and I cannot stress it enough: sack off the wheels, do Rome on foot… [READ THE FULL REVIEW]
