Setting

Bairro Alto backstreets

Patio do Tijolo quiets Lisbon’s colour and clamour with zen palettes, plant-filled courtyards and a lounge that wafts with the sweet scent of pastel de nata. Emerging artists were brought in to breathe life into each individually styled room, dotting their framed photography against silhouetted views of the River Tagus. And if all the stark serenity causes city life to slip from memory, the bustling Bairro Alto is on your doorstep to remind you there’s beauty in balance.

Our favourite rooms

The Patio Rooms earn their name from their palm-dappled outdoor space, ideal if you’re seeking some additional seclusion. If you’re looking to steal sights of Lisbon’s storied 25 de Abril bridge, the Premium Room with Panoramic View is the cream of this crop.

Sustainability efforts

Nurturing relationships with local communities, artisans and suppliers comes naturally to staff at Patio do Tijolo, where Earth-kind practices are at the core of operations. The hotel is run on solar-powered energy, hundreds of native trees were planted around its grounds to help support Portugal’s ecosystems, single-use plastic is banned, everything that can be is recycled, and movement sensors are installed to limit light pollution. All the decor, in rooms and communal spaces, has been acquired from Lisbon’s emerging artisans and regional farmers supply the majority of the restaurant’s fresh produce.

You’re unlikely to need a set of wheels in Lisbon, and there isn’t any designating parking at the hotel. If you are driving, ask staff for directions to one of the city’s carparks.

Worth getting out of bed for

You won’t be hard-pressed to fill days in a locale as central as Bairro Alto; but if you do decide to venture further afield, start with a walking tour through Alfama and Mouraria, where faint fado tunes liven the streets and independent eateries sate laidback crowds. Creatives can mooch around ceramic shops and artisan studios in Chiado, or visit the Feeting Room — a concept store filled with clothing and homeware from young Portuguese designers. From there, it’s a short walk up to the Botanical Gardens, home to a butterfly sanctuary and the Museu Nacional de História Natural. The 28 Tram takes you on a snapshot ride round the city, food tours teach you about its storied culinary traditions and an evening cruise down the River Tagus puts you in prime position for sunset. For alternative angles, the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara observation point has equally enviable views.

Local restaurants

Flickering candles light the way at A Nossa Casa — a cosy neighbourhood spot, where dishes are made with seasonal ingredients from the local markets and paired with handpicked bottles. Dine among locals at A Taberna da Rua das Flores, lauded for its welcoming atmosphere, modern twists on traditional plates (try the Madeira honey-glazed aubergine) and reams of Portuguese wines. Award-winning Ofício Tasco Atípico often has lengthy wait lists, but reserve in advance and you’ll be rewarded with seafood tacos, grilled avocado salads, garlic-flecked prawns and homemade salted caramel tarts.

Local cafés

The pastel de nata may be straight out of the oven, but Martinho da Arcada has been serving these crowd-drawing specialities since 1782 — and you’ll quickly learn, the proof is, quite literally, in the pudding.

Local bars

Spend an evening listening to traditional tunes at Fado & Wine, where crisp glasses of Malvasia help find your dancing feet. Rooftop Park sits on the top level of an old  (you guessed it) carpark, pouring a lengthy list of craft cocktails to live DJ beats into the early hours. If you stop by during the afternoon, there’s a calmer ambience and striking views of the Santa Catarina church.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this soul-soothing stay in the Portuguese capital and unpacked their hand-cast ceramics and local cookbooks, a full account of their peacefully paced city break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Patio do Tijolo in Lisbon…

You won’t spot the entrance to Patio do Tijolo at first, but as with so many things in life, look closer and you’ll find something special. And this boutique retreat, in the beating heart of Lisbon’s Bairro Alto, is just that.

Meticulously designed rooms clear heads with calming tones, oak finishes and cushy king-size beds: most also have private outdoor spaces, some shaded with looming palm trees and others admiring the city’s celebrated sights. Downstairs, open-plan designs invite laidback conversation, and Elena Somalo has cast her magic over the courtyards, where jacarandas and lemon trees form a biophilic border between you and the city’s bustle. If you do decide there’s more to days than sipping coffee and sampling oven-fresh pastel de nata (we aren’t convinced), then Lisbon’s world of azulejo-tiled wonders, tram-trailed cobbles and leafy squares are a mere mooch away. Small but mighty has never felt quite so true…
