Setting

By the Setas

Cultural crashpad Ocean Drive Sevilla takes creative cues from the sensory city around it – a tapas restaurant with live music and events is in the works, bedroom balconies flirt with Las Setas views, and Mudéjar tiles and textures enliven the open-plan lobby bar. But what lies beyond this contemporary bolthole is just as seductive: ornate Moorish design, streetside flamenco performances, long-loved dining spots and awe-inspiring architecture. And with sunshine in generous supply, Seville’s a culture fix you’re sure to warm to...

Our favourite rooms

Pared-down palettes and Scandi-inspired interiors characterise the sleek rooms at Ocean Drive Sevilla. The Superior Balcony and Deluxe Balcony rooms let you get up close and personal with the undulating Las Setas; the soft-hued suite, which is almost as big as its furnished plaza-facing terrace, does too. The Suite Terrace is also set up with a vinyl player and mini beer keg; both will loosen up those hips ahead of any flamenco-flouncing you have planned later on.

Top Table

Until the restaurant opens, the jury’s out on this one…

Hotel restaurant

The hotel’s soon-to-open restaurant is set to impress with top-notch tapas. Offerings will include traditional bites, such as patatas bravas, plus a few in-house interpretations. And the chefs make the most of the region’s fine produce – ingredients such as locally-caught fish, tangy olive oils and nutty cheeses keep things extra español.

Hotel bar

If you want to wash down a glass of wine or beer with a side of people-watching, head to the plant-dotted lobby bar and settle back to enjoy the hotel’s comings and goings.

Last orders

Breakfast is served from 7am until 11am (earlier on request); then all-day dining is available from 12.30pm until 11pm (midnight on Fridays and Saturdays). The lobby bar pours from 8am until 1am.

Spain

Ocean Drive Sevilla’s city centre position, on Plaza de la Encarnación, places you within easy walking distance of Seville’s top sights.

Planes

Seville Airport is a 25-minute cab ride from the hotel.

Trains

Renfe runs rail routes from several Spanish hubs, such as Córdoba, Cádiz and Madrid, to Seville’s Santa Justa rail station, which is a 15-minute taxi from the hotel.

Automobiles

If you’re here for a city break, don’t bother with wheels – walking or taxis will get you around best. Otherwise, road trip southern-Spain-style and head to Cádiz, Ronda or Córdoba, which are all under two hours’ away by car.

Worth getting out of bed for

You might not even have to leave your room to marvel at mushroom-inspired Las Setas, which is on Ocean Drive’s doorstep. Not as close from your balcony, but still a short stroll away is Catedral de Sevilla, the jewel in the city’s multicultural crown. The climb and the views from its Moorish bell tower La Giralda are breathtaking and if you’re left wanting ‘Moor’, next door is the Real Alcázar Seville, a Mudéjar masterpiece embellished with intricate tiles, ornate archways and fountain-flanked gardens. Wander down the labyrinthine alleys in south-of-the-river neighbourhood Triana and you’ll find ceramic workshops, live flamenco music and down-to-earth markets. The annual Feria de Sevilla typically takes place in spring, and locals and visitors come together to perfect their sevillanas steps, a flamenco-style folk dance.

Local restaurants

Tasting menus at starred Abantal impress with avant-garde Andalusian cuisine and the mesmerising open-plan kitchen is best admired from the chef’s table. Rumoured to be the oldest taberna in Seville, El Rinconillo has been serving fuss-free traditional cuisine since 1670 in a ceramic-clad space. At riverside Restaurante De La O, the always-changing menu celebrates locally sourced and seasonal produce.

Local cafés

Brother-run Muy Coffee is laidback spot for a cup of organic joe, plus homemade sandwiches and sweet treats. If you’re in need of something virtuous to counter a late night, Syko Juice & Coffee Bar restores with green smoothies, foamy iced lattes and vegan sandwiches.

Local bars

For drinks that taste as good as they look, head to the multicoloured glow of Naked and Famous (let’s just hope that after a few Bloody Nakeds, you don’t live up to the name). Campari-coloured lights at Coctelería Montana Sevilla draw in drinkers like moths to a flame, but it's the playful concoctions that keep them sipping – a bourbon and matcha cocktail disguised as a pint, or a gin and hibiscus tipple in a mini bath tub, perhaps.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this accomplished Andalusian hotel and unpacked their orange blossom perfume and hand-painted fans, a full account of their city break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Ocean Drive Sevilla…

In a city which celebrates its centuries-old architecture, the new kid on the block Ocean Drive Sevilla looks ahead too. Squarely across from Las Setas, the world’s largest wooden structure and a more recent addition to Seville’s cultural scene, the hotel’s city centre locale nods both to the past and the future. Scandi-inspired interiors are a neutral tonic to the city’s ornate façades, but traditional features are still threaded through the contemporary space – Mudéjar-like tiles, lofty ceilings, latticed wall panels. Days are spent swapping modern interpretations for the real deal and step counts will soar (vitamin D levels, too) as you wander into awe-inspiring buildings and weave down sun-soaked cobblestone streets. Back at basecamp, an all-hours concierge, soon-to-open tapas restaurant and host of creative events bolster Ocean Drive’s credentials as a covetable crashpad.
