Our favourite rooms

The boho spirit is strong here: Nômade Tulum has perfected a textured, artisan-led, casually-thrown-together look that’s pure Instagram fodder. Oceanfront Suites are right on the beach, with a shaded patio and hammock to make the most of the views. We love the Beachfront Rooms’ Morocco-meets-Mexico aesthetic, a glorious jumble of driftwood-framed mirrors, hand-woven lamps and exotic rugs.

Poolside

The beachfront pool shares a sense of mysticism that you’ll find at the region’s awe-inspiring cenotes: its emerald-green waters are canopied by swaying palm trees and flanked by washed stone walls. Lush views are hemmed by the day-bed-dotted shoreline, and salty dips are only a saunter away.

Spa

Inspired by the elements and Mexico’s pre-Hispanic cultures, the Yäan Healing Sanctuary Spa is as much about inner health as outer beauty. Treatments here start with a water circuit of saunas, steam rooms, hammam sessions and massage pools. The spa’s organic rooftop garden grows flowers and herbs for soothing baths, scrubs and holistic Mayan therapies harnessing heat, smoke, oils and sacred infusions. Plan a visit during a new or full moon to take part in the spa’s Temazcal Ceremony, a healing and cleansing experience in a sweat lodge, proceeds of which support art and conservation programmes in Mayan communities.

Packing tips

Don’t be fooled by the earthy Moroccan stylings: the tribe here is more digital nomad than ascetic detoxer, so you can leave your plug adaptors at home – the hotel will provide them.

Also

The soft sands in front of Nomade are public, but the hotel has its own sized-for-two day-beds and gently swaying hammocks from which guests can languidly gaze out to sea.

Children

Welcome, though not particularly catered to. This hedonistic hotel is for over-21s only from 26 December to 16 January; it's family-friendly throughout the rest of the year.

Food and Drink

Dress Code

Keep things loose and luxe: printed kaftans, layered bracelets, floaty white t-shirts and bare feet.

Hotel restaurant

Named after a sculptural tropical tree, Macondo’s focus is on nurturing, seasonal vegetarian and vegan fare: snack on vegetable sushi and almond falafel, or take a seat at one of the communal tables for a superfood-packed quinoa bowl or seared tempeh with a piquant mango salsa. For seafood, head to La Popular, a beach-facing eatery with the rustic good looks of a market stall. Meals here are served on patinated wooden tables set right on the sands: order the catch of the day (sustainably caught by local fishermen), choose a marinade (the grilled garlic, sea salt and cascabel chile is irresistible) and give in to the intoxicating rhythm of Tulum life. Relinquish all (self-)control at omakase-style Kuu, where chef Hirokazu Sato impresses with seasonal tasting menus of Japanese bites.

Hotel bar

Add palapa to your lexicon: these open-sided, thatch-roofed hangouts are just made for breeze-catching with a cocktail in hand. Strewn with thick rugs, floor cushions and low zinc tables, the Lobby Bar is a laid-back spot to sample mojitos and swap travel stories with other guests. The Beach Bar is all weather-beaten wood, fruity libations and front-row views of the Caribbean.

Last orders

At Macondo, breakfast is 7.30am–11.30am; lunch is 11.30am–6pm, and dinner is 6pm–10.30pm. La Popular serves lunch from noon to 6pm; dinner from 6pm to 11pm. Dinner at reservations-needed Kuu is at 6pm or 8pm. The bars at both restaurants pour until 11pm.

Room service

Dishes from a dedicated menu can be brought to your room between 11.30am and 10.30pm.

Beachfront Nômade sits right on the sands at the southern end of Tulum’s hotel zone.

Planes

A 90-minute drive away from the hotel, Cancun Airport is served by daily flights from a host of American and European cities. Taxis are plentiful, or Nômade can arrange one-way transfers from USD300 a couple.

Automobiles

You won’t need a car if your sights are firmly set on the beach: Tulum is easily explored on foot or by bicycle, and local restaurants and bars are just a cab ride away. Your own set of wheels might be useful for day trips to colonial Mérida or the Mayan ruins; the hotel has free on-site parking.

Worth getting out of bed for

Start the day with a spot of Hatha or Vinyasa yoga at the eye-catching shala overlooking the treetops. Embrace your inner earth child and leave any urban cynicism at the door: Nômade Tulum regularly invites shamans, healers, therapists and dancers to run workshops and retreats. Blessed with powder-soft sand and crystalline waters, the southern stretch of the Riviera Maya is still relatively undeveloped. Much of your time should be spent in the water: the Caribbean may be just a few steps from your cabana, but it’s worth venturing further afield for a splash in unspoilt cenotes and reefs teeming with marine life. Yucatan Diving & Travel can organise underwater adventures and visits to Sian Ka’an’s protected lagoons and wetlands. Dating back to the 13th century, Tulum’s Mayan ruins are undeniably picturesque, perched as they are on limestone cliffs overlooking turquoise waters. A staircase leads down to the beach: pack a swimsuit and spend an afternoon sunning yourself like one of the old-world temple’s resident iguanas.

Local restaurants

Tulum’s jungle road is now firmly on the foodie map. Hartwood’s sustainable cuisine is second to none: the menu changes according to what’s fresh in the market or what the fishermen have brought in, and everything is cooked on a wood-burning stove. Come early to snag a table here and plan carefully, as it’s closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Cenzontle’s secret garden is the town’s worst-guarded, well, secret: the setting is delightfully romantic and the short, inventive menu (duck carnitas tacos, peach pork ribs) isn’t bad, either.

Local cafés

Grab a seat within view of Safari’s open-fire cooking pit: this little joint, run from a converted Airstream, dishes up Tulum’s best tacos and killer margaritas to boot.

Local bars

Palm-fringed Gitano is as sultry and seductive as its name suggests: sip smoky mezcal cocktails under the dancing lights of its Seventies-inspired disco ball.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this beachfront hotel on the Riviera Maya and unpacked their panamas and Havaianas, a full account of their coastal break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Nômade Tulum…

You’d be forgiven for thinking you’ve taken a wrong turn off the jungle road and wandered into a kasbah in the Atlas Mountains: with floor cushions, thatch-roofed palapas and artfully weathered driftwood, Nômade Tulum has the hipster good looks of a free spirit stretching golden limbs in the sun. It may sport the pouffes and beaten-metal hallmarks of a Moroccan retreat, but this seaside stay on the Riviera Maya is thoroughly Mexican: the spa takes its cues from ancient therapies harnessing the power of smoke, steam and sacred herbs; the beachside grill whips up zingy marinades for the catch of the day; the cocktails are strong and fruity. Don’t expect peaceful seclusion or unabashed luxury: from the long communal tables to the out-of-Africa tents, life here is all about joyful, carefree living with your feet on the sand.
