Cape Town casa

Close to Kloof Street

The clue’s in the name at Noah House in Cape Town: this private hideaway will indeed be your home, sweet home (though we’re not sure who Noah is). From your Tamboerskloof digs, you’ll be able to walk all over the city, including around the corner to Kloof Street and the best bars, boutiques and restaurants in town. Plus, it’s not your average landlord who bakes for you every day: afternoon-tea treats made by the Dutch proprietors have been known to include brownies, scones and butter cookies.

At the hotel

Free WiFi throughout, pantry on the landing, café, yoga mats to borrow. In rooms: free bottled water, air-conditioning, smart TV and Charlotte Rhys bath products.

Our favourite rooms

The Suite with Balcony steals the show for obvious reasons (its balcony) – the first-floor room has a view of Signal Hill, with Table Mountain and a palm-fringed Lion’s Head in the distance.

Packing tips

The house can be booked as exclusive-use and for longer stays, so you may want to consider packing heavy…

The Victorian building is not easily accessible for wheelchair users.

Noah House welcomes children aged 14 and over.

Sustainability efforts

The ‘plastic’ bottles are actually made from plants, and water is in reusable glass bottles. Produce at the café is so local, most of it has come from the street, if not within Cape Town.

Noah House
6 Tamboerskloof Road Tamboerskloof
Cape Town
South Africa

Noah House is in central Cape Town, in trendy Tamboerskloof, close to Kloof Street and in the shadow of Table Mountain.

The city’s international airport is a 25-minute drive from the hotel – transfers start from R850.

Almost everywhere in Cape Town is within walking distance, but if you’re planning on getting out to the Winelands and beyond, a car will come in handy. There are three off-street parking spaces at the hotel, plus more street parking. Security guards will watch your wheels for you.

Worth getting out of bed for

Noah House is in Tamboerskloof, a central setting and the perfect Cape Town base for trips to Kloof Street, up Table Mountain and out to Camps Bay. The Dutch owners are so used to the urban European ideal of walking and cycling everywhere, they couldn’t possibly have it any other way – unless you want to upgrade to the house car: a vintage Land Rover Defender, with a driver you can borrow for picnics along the peninsula or just some plain old top-down cruising.

Local restaurants

Kloof Street (and all its restaurants and bars) is a three-minute walk from Noah House. Stylish, easy-to-stroll-to spots in the neighbourhood include Fyn for Japanese-African fusion food, Thali for, er, thalis, and The Bailey on Bree Street, importing a grand European café to Cape Town; or go Greek at Ouzeri.

Local bars

Almost everything has tassels at The Athletic, the perfect spot for cocktails in a cosy corner – there’s a whole page of tequilas, reposados and mezcals to try, too. Or compare Victorian-architecture notes at fellow 19th-century building Kloof Street House, now with fairy lights and cocktails in the garden, jazz at Sunday lunch and plenty of preserved characterful crannies.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this homely hotel in South Africa and unpacked their red wine and rooibos, a full account of their city break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Noah House in Cape Town…

Once a farmhouse but now close to one of Cape Town’s coolest corners, Noah House is ready to give refuge to anyone in search of high ceilings, panelled walls, a dazzling collection of tiling and Dutch treats baked daily. The dust from the renovations has settled and this Victorian beauty has kept her charms (but now with added velvety flat whites).

You’ll be able to spy both Table Mountain and Lion’s Head (with a palm tree helping the view along) from the balcony of one of the suites. Down on the patio (where there’s more marvellous mosaic-work), café tables are set up for breakfasts and morning coffees, as you plot your Cape Town schedule. Helpfully, most of it will be within walking distance of your designer dwelling, thanks to its setting on Tamboerskloof Road, with a lounge, patio and café worth hurrying home for. The owners moved to Cape Town from the Netherlands two years ago to make their new nest – and luckily for us they want to share it.
