A hotel this special could only be born from the heart, so say ‘cheers’ to Mudbrick’s charming owners, too: Robyn and Nicholas, who purchased Mudbrick’s plot of land back in 1992. They’ve been busy planting, primping and perfecting their island hideaway ever since, and their efforts have borne multiple delicious fruit – just look at those verdant vineyards and that pair of relaxed restaurants, for starters…

At the hotel

Beach; vineyards, cellar door and wine shop; free WiFi throughout. In rooms: TV, Bluetooth speaker, kitchenette, working fireplace. The Cottages each have an al fresco Jacuzzi; the Lodge has a Nespresso machine.

Our favourite rooms

The two little cottages – Merlot and Olive – were born equal: both have charming old-world decor, rustic decorations and a spacious living room with views of Auckland and the ocean. If you’re here with a gang, opt for the three-bedroom lodge (caffeine-addicts will love its Nespresso machine).

Packing tips

Leave space by the bottle-load in your luggage – to be filled with the hotel’s wine, plucked from the little wine shop, naturally.

Also

Communal areas are wheelchair accessible; the lodge and cottages are ground-level, but they haven’t been specially adapted for guests with limited mobility.

Children

Little Smiths are welcome. The hotel can provide high chairs, toys, crayons, colouring pencils and paper.

Sustainability efforts

Earth-kind cleaning products are used; the bulk of the restaurants’ produce is grown onsite (everything else is locally sourced); guests are encouraged to go horse-riding, hiking and bushwalking.

Hotel restaurant

The (culinary) magic happens in the high-ceilinged, wood-lavished Mudbrick Main Restaurant, which flickers atmospherically with candlelight by night. The menu is a love letter to seasonal Kiwi produce: highlight dishes include locally farmed Te Makutu oysters, twice-cooked pork with umami broth, fish of the day with brown butter and nettles, and a ‘gin and tonic’ dessert starring finger limes, green apple, cucumber, dill and matcha. For the best introduction to the chef’s considerable talents, opt for the dazzling degustation menu; set aside at least three hours to enjoy its seven courses. There is also the more casual Archive Bistro, which continues to cook up relaxed cuisine in rustic-chic surroundings throughout the day.

Hotel bar

Enjoy drinks in the restaurants or head to the hotel’s characterful cellar door for a wine tasting; add in a flavour-matched gourmet platter if you’re peckish.

Last orders

Breakfast is served from 9am until 11am; dinner is available till late. In winter (mid June–end of August), the restaurant closes on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Mudbrick is sitting pretty in Oneroa, on rugged Waiheke Island, 35 minutes from downtown Auckland by ferry.

Planes

Auckland International Airport is 45 kilometres away (a two-hour drive); get in touch with Smith24 to book your flights.

Trains

It takes around 15 minutes to get from Auckland to Britomart Station, a 35-minute ferry ride from Mudbrick.

Automobiles

There’s plenty of free onsite parking. It’s worth having a car so that you can explore the island’s beaches, restaurants, vineyards and olive-oil farms at your own place.

Other

If you’re coming by ferry, hire a car or jump in a taxi from the port. Fancy arriving by chopper? It’s a scenic seven-minute flight, landing at the hotel’s helicopter pad.

Worth getting out of bed for

Mudbrick House is your boutique basecamp for adventures on beachy, outdoorsy Waiheke Island. Those vineyards are vying for attention – pay them their dues with help from Ananda Tours, which will pick you up (and drop you back) at the hotel. Get a bird’s-eye view of the scenery by whooshing through the air and enjoying immersive forest walks with Ecozip Adventures, whose HQ is on Trig Hill Road. For something a little less aerial, spend a cultural morning or afternoon admiring the collections at Waiheke Community Art Gallery, on Korora Road. Oenophiles will enjoy the Waiheke Island Explorer Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tour, which lets passengers visit popular vineyards, beaches and seaside villages full of galleries, shops and cafés – all at their own pace.

Local restaurants

Bivalve addicts will love the Oyster Inn on Ocean View Road. If you’d prefer to sample Mediterranean flavours, stay on Oceanview Road for Fenice, which rustles up perfect pastas and pizzas and flavour-packed salads. For something a little more fancy, head to poised Poderi Crisci Restaurant & Vineyard on Awaawaroa Road.

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Mudbrick Vineyard and Restaurant on Waiheke Island…

If Mudbrick Vineyard & Restaurant is anything to go by, 1992 was a vintage year. That’s when two disenchanted accountants, Robyn and Nicholas, fell in love with a patch of sun-scorched Waiheke land, bought it and then began the Mudbrick story. In the years that followed, they lavished love on the plot, planting and nurturing the vineyards that would earn Mudbrick half its name. An excellent restaurant followed suit, then three romantic cottages. Like its grapes, Mudbrick is a happy fusion of nature and good taste: rooms survey the beautiful outdoors and feature natural materials, enlivened by artful furnishings and pops of colour here and there; the restaurants and bar also share Mother Nature as main muse. Stays here are spent unwinding in the bucolic grounds, sampling the chef’s extensive talents and enjoying outdoorsy Waiheke adventures – followed by a glass or three of that Waiheke wine, naturally.
