Mona is in the Athenian neighbourhood of Psirri, a minute’s walk from Monastiraki Square.

Planes

The city’s airport is a 45-minute drive from the hotel – transfers can be arranged.

Trains

You’ll be able to catch a train from the airport to Monastiraki’s station, which is also handy for getting around the city by metro.

Automobiles

A car isn’t necessary to explore Athens from this central stay, but you can stow it at a nearby car park if you need to.

Other

Anyone (wisely) heading onwards to the Greek Islands can head to the port of Piraeus by catching a 15-minute train from Monastiraki.

Worth getting out of bed for

Hanging out in the hotel’s lively lobby is an activity in itself – you’ll be able to meet fellow guests as well as artistic Athenians, admire the teapot collection or arrange a tour of the hotel’s many artworks; the staff can also arrange sound-healing and Thai massages. Twice a week, the rooftop hosts a gathering of the House of Shila’s members. The Benaki Museum of Islamic Art is nearby, as are the antique markets of Monastiraki and Avissinias Square, in case you haven’t stockpiled enough finds back at House of Shila HQ; or seek out treasures of an edible kind at Varvakios’ food-dispensing stalls.

Local restaurants

Traditional Greek food can be enjoyed in view of the Acropolis from the rooftop of Cafe Avissinia on the namesake square and in the heart of its antique market. For a more modern take on a traditional taverna, Linou & Soubasis, a few minutes’ walk from Mona, is the 21st-century restaurant for you. The name may make you think otherwise, but it’s Greek food all the way at Seychelles in the downtown district of Metaxourgeio.

Local bars

Drinking spots attempting to rival Mona’s rooftop include Juan Rodriguez, with a bar counter just made for sliding slammers along, and the Athenian-approved wine bar Heteroclito, near the Mitropoleos cathedral.

For all movers and shakers seeking a spiritual home in Athens, Mona is the super-cool Psirri stay for you. The hotel is steps from Monastiraki Square, which means easy (12-minute-walk) access to the Acropolis, which you’ll also be able to spy from the rooftop terrace. The living room is mostly where it’s at though (with some competition from the basement): a stylish space to hang out, while visiting chefs cook in the kitchen. 

You can literally take the carpet up off the floor and home with you, since everything is for sale – they just knew you’d be wanting a slice of Mona’s essence. This includes, however impractical, furniture (though the organic cotton sheets may be a more sensible place to start). ‘Mona’ may mean to you a 1990 classic released by Neighbours star Craig McLachlan (or earlier versions by the Rolling Stones and Bo Diddley, depending on how respectable your music tastes are) – and you can listen to our hearts going bumpity bump for this Athenian dream.
